Report released on how tornado outbreak was handled

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- A new report came out on how local fire departments handled the tornado outbreak in 2011.

The U.S. Fire Administration report said while some communities were better prepared than others, many responders admitted to not knowing the details of their community emergency operations plans.

They also said there is a greater need for more disaster management training and communication.

Harvest Fire Chief Tim Westwick said it is difficult to prepare for disaster like last April, but volunteer departments do the best they can.

"There might be some critiquing on the communication; you got to do what you got to do. We communicate by radio out there, held it tight out there, keep it going, triaged and everybody was wonderful," he said.

Many fire departments said they've tweaked their response plans since that day.

They are prepared no matter what disaster strikes.
