North Korea names Kim Jong-un top military commander (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korea said Saturday it has officially appointed Kim Jong-un, anointed successor and the youngest son of the late leader Kim Jong-il, the supreme commander of North Korea's 1.2 million-strong military.

The North's state news agency KCNA said the appointment was made at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Party Friday.

KCNA said the Political Bureau members "courteously proclaimed the dear comrade Kim Jong-un, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea, assumed the supreme commandership of the Korean People's Army" according to a will made by Kim Jong-il on October 8.

Since the death of Kim Jong-il this month aged 69, North Korean state media have dubbed the junior Kim in his late 20s, as "Supreme Commander." But the announcement on the politburo's decision meant an official approval of his control of one of the world's most powerful armed forces.

Kim Jong-un was not only named a four-star general but also given the vice-chairmanship of the ruling party's central military commission by his father last year.

Obama to ask for extra $1.2 trillion in debt

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration says the federal government has nearly reached its borrowing limit ? again.

Treasury officials said Tuesday that the White House plans to request another $1.2 trillion in borrowing authority Friday. The increase is necessary, they say, because the government will be within $100 billion of its current limit by then.

In the past, such a request would be routine. But this one follows a summer of intense partisan debate over the nation's record debt, which has yet to end despite a last-minute deal reached in August that averted a potential default.

The increase would boost the debt limit to $16.4 trillion. Congress and the Obama administration agreed to raise it to that level in three steps as part of the August deal. Officials say that should be enough to allow the government to keep borrowing until the end of 2012, or just after the presidential election.

Congress can reject the request, although Obama can veto their objection. If Congress doesn't act by Jan. 14, the increase will take place automatically.

The debt limit is the amount the government can borrow to finance its operations. It has soared because the government has run record deficits over the past decade. The borrowed money has helped pay for two wars, stimulate the nation's economy after the worst recession since the Great Depression and finance broad tax cuts initiated during the Bush administration.

The enormity of the debt has also stoked a debate in Congress over spending and taxes. Polls show growing voter anger with the inability of both parties to reach solutions to the country's budget problems.

In August, Congress and the administration agreed to raise the borrowing limit by $2.1 trillion in three steps. The deal was reached hours before a potential default on the nation's debt and only after the parties also agreed to cut more than $2 trillion from the deficit over the next 10 years.

Three days after the agreement was signed into law, credit rating agency Standard & Poor's downgraded long-term U.S. debt. The difficulty Congress and the White House had in reaching agreement was a key reason for the downgrade, S&P said.

The parties remain at odds over how to reduce the deficit. In November, a bipartisan panel failed to meet a deadline to agree on $1.2 trillion of the cuts. That means automatic cuts of that amount will begin in January 2013 ? a condition included in last summer's deal.

Republicans want to modify the timetable for the automatic cuts, largely because it includes steep cuts to the nation's defense budget.

Congress agreed to raise the debt limit by $400 billion in August and by another $500 billion in September.

House Republicans voted against the second increase. But they failed to block it because the Senate approved it. The increases are scheduled to take effect unless both chambers vote against them.

Sony Needs to Revive This Gorgeous Sliding Radio As a Bluetooth Speaker [Past Perfect]

Sony Needs to Revive This Gorgeous Sliding Radio As a Bluetooth SpeakerSometimes Sony can make some questionable business decisions, but rarely am I able to fault them on design. Particularly back in the 1970s?just look at this cubic portable AM radio.

As far as radios go today, a single set of sliders for volume and tuning are pretty low-tech. But were the TR-1825 resurrected as a Bluetooth speaker, all you'd need was a control for volume. And I'd be happy if they left it as a slider. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing. The radio's design is timeless, with interlocking sliding faces that form a perfect cube when it's closed, protecting both the speaker and controls when in transit.

Sony Needs to Revive This Gorgeous Sliding Radio As a Bluetooth SpeakerWere I able to get my hands on one of these now the first thing I'd try to do is hack some wireless functionality in there. And I don't know the first thing about hacking! That's why I'd love to plead my case to Sony about why they need to revive and update the TR-1825 as a modern Bluetooth accessory. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one happy to pony up for it. [Sony via ISO50]

Deep Frog Voice Signals His Chromosome Number

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Evolution

Two related frog species differ by chromosome number, which deepened one species' calls and tells the females who's who.

More 60-Second Science

The eastern grey tree frog [sound] looks exactly like the closely related Cope?s grey tree frog [sound]. The big difference between the two species is beneath the surface?the eastern has twice the number of chromosomes as does the Cope?s.

Having more sets of chromosomes makes the cells of the eastern frog larger than the cells found in the Cope?s. And those bigger cells makes the eastern?s song just a little deeper.

Now University of Missouri researcher Carl Gerhardt and his student Mitch Tucker have determined that the slight difference in the calls?here?s the eastern again [sound] and here?s the Cope?s [sound]?is how the females know which species? males to buddy up with: the ones with the same chromosome number that they have. The work is in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences. [Mitch A. Tucker and H.C. Gerhardt, Parallel changes in mate-attracting calls and female preferences in autotriploid tree frogs]

Speciation is often caused by a geographic barrier that keeps populations from mating. But the tree frog situation may be a rare case in which chromosome duplication, and its subsequent effects, presented a reproductive barrier. As in humans, it comes down to whether he calls.

Community group buys Bucks County Playhouse

Posted: Monday, December 26, 2011 4:30 pm | Updated: 6:30 pm, Mon Dec 26, 2011.

The show will go on at the Bucks County Playhouse.

In a coordinated effort by the Bridge Street Foundation, Broadway producer Jed Bernstein and?Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy founder Peggy McRae the beloved theater has been purchased.

The sale was finalized on Friday, according to statement released Monday.

"We love this area and are excited to be able to bring back the theater," said Kevin and Sherri Daugherty, founders of the Bridge Street Foundation, in a statement.

"There has been a tremendous show of support for this effort by the local community."

Bridge Street is a nonprofit, family foundation, which was established to support the local community through the acquisition of important historic landmarks and aiding their transition into self-sustaining contributors to the community, according to the statement.

It is reportedly the driving financial investor in the playhouse deal.

The nonprofit takes its name from the street that bridges Lambertville, N.J., and New Hope.

The foundation has separately acquired the former Playhouse Inn property next to the theater.

Regarding that acquisition, Kevin Daugherty said in a statement, "Our interest in the neighboring property is to provide improved waterfront access in a way that is complementary to the playhouse and is consistent with the borough's planning goals. Renovation of the building is expected to be a longer term project. The more immediate need is to get the Bucks County Playhouse open in time for the 2012 summer season."

The group has also recently purchased the First Baptist Church of Lambertville, now renamed Lambertville Hall.

Conservancy founder McRae could not be reached for comment Monday.

The future of the Bucks County Playhouse has been uncertain for much of the year.

Since the final curtain fell following last Christmas season, the drama has intensified over 2011.

Bucks County Playhouse, once known as America's most famous summer theater, was a pre-Broadway venue premiering well known plays such as "Harvey" and "Barefoot in the Park."

The property was reclaimed by the bank at sheriff's sale, and several big investors have spent the year vying for the historic, 450-seat facility on the banks of the Delaware River; all with big dreams of a revitalized summer theater.

But other potential investors backed out of their purchase plans for the playhouse, citing the millions of dollars needed to repair the old grist mill and get quality shows up and running.

For months, the conservancy and another community based group, Center for the Performing Arts of Bucks County, have separately worked toward the playhouse purchase by asking for community donations and laying out artistic visions for the theater's future.

Center for the Performing Arts of Bucks County founder Howard Perloff said Monday that he will support the conservancy, and will return the funds he had already raised as capital.

"I am happy that the playhouse has been saved," said Perloff, of Solebury. "I hope I can have some participation in the future productions of the playhouse. If my help is needed, I am there."

After dropping the price several times this year, the landmark theater was most recently listed at $2.1 million.

The theater was purchased Friday for less than $2.1 million, said Jim Gorecki, exclusive sales agent for Fidelity Commercial Real Estate, an affiliate of Stonebridge Bank.

Though he would not disclose the final purchase price, Gorecki noted it was a cash transaction, and financing was not involved.

Gorecki was pleased with the purchase, and said that, although it was especially challenging in such a tough economy, the bank had been committed to finding a buyer who would conserve the theater for the arts.

An engineering report, compiled by the conservancy, estimates the theater needs $1 million to bring it up to building codes. The bulk of that cost includes fire detection and sprinkler systems and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.

It would cost another $1 million to replace the roof, paint and repair the exterior, refurbish the seats and replace the dressing rooms.

At the artistic direction of Broadway producer Bernstein, the conservancy aims to have the playhouse packed with plays, musicals, solo artists, speaker forums, theater camps and children's theater year-round.

It also seeks to return the theater to Actors' Equity status.

Plans for the iconic theater's return in summer 2012 are already in the works.

Announcements about future programming will be forthcoming in early January.

Borough council President Sharyn Keiser lauded the Bridge Street Foundation, producer Bernstein, and conservancy founder Peggy McRae for their success in saving the playhouse.

"It's a phenomenal start for the (new) year," said Keiser. "The playhouse was the jewel of New Hope, and it's going to be brought back to that."

A revitalized playhouse will not only mean a renewed spirit for residents and regional theater-lovers, but also an economic boost for small businesses and restaurants, she said.

"It's a win-win," said Keiser. "New Hope is known for the theater, and it's back."

"It couldn't be any better."

Minister: Spain to fall back into recession (AP)

MADRID ? Spain will slide back into recession early next year with the current quarter and the first of 2012 both registering negative growth, new Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Monday.

De Guindos said he expects the economy ? the eurozone's fourth largest ? to contract by between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent on the previous quarter in the final three months of this year and again in the first quarter of next year. He said the outlook for next year was poor.

If the Spanish economy were to contract by between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent for an entire year, it would shrink roughly 1 percent.

"Let nobody be fooled, the next two quarters are not going to be easy either in terms of growth or employment," de Guindos said.

Spain began to emerge from a near two-year recession last year. It had two successive quarters of growth in 2011 before posting zero growth in the third period.

De Guindos took office last week as part of the new conservative Popular Party government. He said then he was confident the country would emerge from its severe economic crisis and return to prosperity and its former status as a job creator.

Spain has the highest unemployment rate of the 17 countries that use the euro, with 21.5 percent joblessness, and is running a swollen budget deficit following the recession that started with the collapse of a real estate bubble.

The Popular Party won a landslide victory in Nov. 20 elections on a promise to get the economy moving again.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged austerity cuts totaling euro16.5 billion ($21.6 billion) and promised labor reforms.

His government is to begin approving urgent measures Friday, including a freeze on filling new civil service vacancies. except in key areas such as the security forces.

Spain has already made sharp cuts to its national spending and introduced several reforms under the former Socialist government, but the economy has failed to respond.

Pope Christmas message calls for end to violence in Syria (Reuters)

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) ? Pope Benedict called for an end to violence in Syria and a resumption of Middle East peace talks on Sunday on a Christmas Day marred by a bomb blast at a Catholic Church in Nigeria.

The leader of the world's 1.3 billion Roman Catholics delivered his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message and blessing to tens of thousands of people in St Peter's Square on a crisp but clear day as millions of others watched on television around the world.

At the end of his address, the 84-year-old pope, celebrating the seventh Christmas season of his pontificate, delivered Christmas greetings in 65 languages, including Turkish, Hebrew, Arabic, Swahili, Hindi, Urdu and Chinese.

"May the Lord come to the aid of our world torn by so many conflicts which even today stain the earth with blood," he said, speaking in Italian from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica.

"May the Prince of Peace grant peace and stability to that Land where he chose to come into the world, and encourage the resumption of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. May he bring an end to the violence in Syria, where so much blood has already been shed," he said in a firm, steady voice.

At least 5,000 people have been killed in nine months of violence that has rocked the Arab nation in clashes between government forces and protesters calling for the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.

Declaring "let us speak out for those who have no voice," Benedict also called for more help for those suffering from hunger, food shortages and displacement in the Horn of Africa, and for those affected by floods in Thailand and the Philippines.

The pope did not mention a blast at a Catholic church on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital Abuja in his address, which was prepared before news of explosion arrived in Rome.

But Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi condemned the blast as blind, absurd "terrorist violence" that enflames hate.

"We are close to the suffering of the Nigerian Church and the entire Nigerian people so tried by terrorist violence, even in these days that should be of joy and peace," Lombardi told Reuters.

According to early reports, at least 19 people were killed.

In his address he also called for full reconciliation and stability in Iraq and Afghanistan.

DECRIES COMMERCIALISATION OF CHRISTMAS

While his Christmas Day message took a partly political slant, mentioning some of the world's flash points, Benedict's Christmas Eve homily some 14 hours before lamented how the true meaning of the day had been overshadowed by materialism.

In that homily, he urged humanity to see through the superficial glitter and commercialism of the season and rediscover the real significance of the humble birth of Jesus.

"Today Christmas has become a commercial celebration, whose bright lights hide the mystery of God's humility, which in turn calls us to humility and simplicity," he said.

"Let us ask the Lord to help us see through the superficial glitter of this season, and to discover behind it the child in the stable in Bethlehem, so as to find true joy and true light."

"... let us strip away our fixation on what is material, on what can be measured and grasped. Let us allow ourselves to be made simple by the God who reveals himself to the simple of heart," he said.

Benedict urged his listeners at the Saturday night Mass to find peace in the symbol of the powerless Christ child in a world continually threatened by violence.

He also urged that those marking the holiday in poverty, suffering or far from home not be forgotten.

At the start of Saturday night's Christmas Eve service, he was wheeled up the central aisle of St Peter's Basilica standing on a mobile platform which he has been using since October.

The Vatican says it is to conserve his strength, allow more people to see him and guard against attacks such as one on Christmas Eve, 2009, when a woman lunged at him and knocked him to the ground. He is believed to suffer from arthritis in the legs.

But he seemed to be in good shape during the solemn service in Christendom's largest church as choirs sang, cantors chanted and music filled the centuries-old basilica.

The pope continues his Christmas and New Year's celebrations on Dec 31 with a year-end Mass of thanksgiving known by its Latin name Te Deum.

On January 1 he marks the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Peace, on January 6 he marks the Epiphany and on January 8 will baptise several newborns in the Sistine Chapel.

He is due to visit Mexico and Cuba in March.

CSI globalVCard

I've been very excited over the past few months to watch virtual payment systems mature. As a technology, virtual payment systems and other kinds of "smart" payment systems (like near-field communication chips) have been available to us for a much longer time than we've been available to them, due to lack of infrastructure and other adoption stoppers. It feels like it's all starting to fall into place, though. CSI globalVCard (free for apps; requires account) is one of the services that makes me optimistic about wider adoption of smart payment systems. CSI globalVCard is a virtual credit card service designed to help businesses make their accounting systems much simpler?although the potential for personal and family use is at the front of my mind, too.

You have to have a specific corporate credit card account (CSI Corporate Card, issued in this case by Regions Bank) to use the free globalVCard app for iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. Those apps let you issue individual virtual credit cards from the corporate account to specific employees. Each card has a specified amount, and can include restrictions such as types of purchases allowed and number of uses allowed. The globalVCard system provides a much easier and simpler process for expense reports than reimbursement?because there is no expense report! The purchases are, in effect, approved before they happen.

As enthusiastic as I am about the prospects for the CSI globalVCard system, having tested it, I do think it needs a few more iterations to mature fully. Data visibility, reports from the system, and a few other features should get better over time, but for now, they are a little rudimentary. CSI globalVCard offers an amazing service, and if I had a small business, I would gladly sign up now to get the benefits of what is offered while awaiting new features that will hopefully be added soon.

The Name Explained: CSI globalVCard
"CSI globalVCard" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but the name is easier to remember once you realize that the "VCard" part stands for "virtual credit card."

The first half the name is trickier. "CSI" comes from Corporate Spending Innovations,?which operates the globalVCard mobile apps and website. GlobalVCard is the part to remember, though, as it's the keyword you'll need to search for the free app for iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. With an account, you can also manage the service via the globalVCard website.

What You Need
To use CSI globalVCard, you need a CSI Corporate Card credit line or prefund account.?That requirement alone may make the service sound pretty restrictive, but it's no more restrictive than what's required for Google Wallet (NFC) (4 stars, free with account)?a Nexus 4G phone with Sprint service and a Google Wallet account or Citi MasterCard account. As I mentioned previously, a lack of infrastructure still holds back virtual payment and NFC services, and limits their reach.

Once you have the credit card account, you can sign up for a free account with globalVCard, which takes only a moment. You'll also want to download the app you intend to use and set a four-digit PIN.

Portuguese Energy Privatisations.

This post was written by Colm McCarthy

All three ?programme? countries, Greece, Ireland and Portugal, are committed to privatisation of state assets.

In Portugal, the state owns 25.05% of EDP, a listed?electricity generation, distribution and supply business, which also owns some gas operations. A?slice of EDP?s operations are in Brazil, some in Spain, most?in Portugal.

The state also owns 51.1% of REN, a listed business which owns the electricity transmission business and the high-pressure?gas pipeline network in Portugal, as well as some LNG and gas storage operations. It has no significant?activities outside Portugal.?Both?EDP and especially REN?embrace regulated activities. Both gas and electricity were originally state-owned in Portugal.

The government has announced the?sale of 21.35% of the shares in EDP to the Three Gorges power company?of China for ?2.7 billion, which will leave the government with less than 4%. The shares are widely held and Three Gorges will be the biggest shareholder. The government has also announced its intention to sell part of its stake in REN, presumably taking it below majority ownership.

These developments are interesting in view of the Irish government?s decision to eschew vertical separation at the ESB and to seek to sell a minority stake in the existing company. Portugal went for vertical separation of the network companies some years back, along the lines of the recommendation for Ireland in the of the Review Group on State Assets which reported in April?2011, and has now decided to exit ownership in powergen/supply?more or less altogether. In addition, they seem willing to go below majority control of REN, the networks business. The State Assets report recommended retention of state ownership, at least for the time being,?in these businesses.

Japan to Enter Dollar Swap Agreement with India - Nikkei

The Japanese government is considering a dollar-swap arrangement with India to provide emergency liquidity in case the European debt crisis reaches emerging economies, the Nikkei business newspaper said on Sunday. The agreement would set the total swap arrangement at $10 billion, or 780 billion yen, Nikkei added.

Both countries are looking to sign off on the arrangement next Wednesday, when leaders meet at a bilateral summit, the paper said.

Like us on Facebook

The currency swaps are expected to support the Indian rupee as it continues to weaken against the greenback and Europe's sovereign debt crisis hits India's exports.

The dollar-swap arrangement with India will follow a similar agreement with South Korea in October.

Roku brings v3.1 software update to first-gen boxes, Amazon Instant Video channel gets refaced

Early birds may get the worms, but early adopters aren't always as equally rewarded. But, as they say, maybe first-gen Roku owners should simply be elated that their box is still on the update trail. A week (and change) after the Roku 2 and Roku LT saw a fairly significant software update, the company is now pushing v3.1 to OG models. As the company says: "Unless your Roku player is smaller than a hockey puck, this update applies to you." The fresh bytes provide added enhancements to support the official Roku iPhone app, improved playback of MP4 files streamed over the internet and over USB via the USB Media Player channel, and the ability to purchase Roku players, accessories and toys within the Roku Channel Store.

Furthermore, we're told that issues found when navigating channels that display content in a grid screen have been solved, and perhaps most importantly, there's support for Amazon's downright delightful new Instant Video channel. Every last unit should see the update pushed their way in the coming hours, but if you're not exactly the "patient" type, just head to Settings -> Playing info -> Check for update.

Obama campaign, DNC return Corzine contributions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee have returned more than $70,000 in contributions from former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine following the collapse of MF Global, Corzine's financial firm, officials said Friday.

Obama's campaign and the DNC returned contributions of $35,800 from Corzine and his wife, Sharon Elghanayan, said Democratic officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. They were not authorized to speak publicly.

Corzine was among Obama's top fundraisers, raising at least $500,000 for Obama's re-election campaign since April, according to records released by the campaign. The former Goldman Sachs chief held a fundraiser for the president last April and was considered a main Obama emissary to Wall Street.

One of the Democratic officials said the campaign and DNC would evaluate whether to return donations from other MF Global employees on a case-by-case basis.

A spokesman for Corzine declined to comment.

MF Global filed for bankruptcy protection on Oct. 31 after a disastrous bet on European debt sparked fear among investors and trading partners. It was the eighth-largest U.S. bankruptcy and the largest on Wall Street since the 2008 collapse of Lehman Bros.

About $1.2 billion was found to be missing from client accounts when the securities firm failed, with much of the missing money belonging to farmers, ranchers and other business owners who used MF Global to reduce their risks from fluctuating prices of commodities such as corn and wheat. The FBI and federal regulators are investigating MF Global.

Corzine, who also is a former U.S. senator, told congressional panels earlier this month that he didn't know any customer money was missing until the day before MF Global collapsed.

Bloomberg News was first to report the returned campaign contributions.

2012: The Year of Hobo Business Ethics? | Peter Shankman

As we come towards the end of the year, I wanted to write a post reflecting on what I was hoping to see next year. And of course, for inspiration, I turned to the Internet, which led me, in no particular order, to the following:

Cats, goals, dogs, fails, Lindsay Lohan, cats again, Gawker, coffee, coffee makers, naked women, and finally, Wikipedia, where I somehow wound up reading about hobos.

But the interesting thing about hobos was this ? Not only did they have their own code, (as made popular in the Mad Men episode of the same name), but they also had their own ethical code.

That?s right ? Hobos had a code of ethical conduct, one to which they tried to always adhere.

Pretty amazing, huh? They rode the rails, took work where they could get it, ate when they could, yet they tethered to a strong sense of ethical balance. When you think about it, that?s a lot more than most of our so called ?pillars of society? are doing nowadays. (How?s your jail cell, Mr. Madoff? How about yours, Mr. Blagojevich?)

With that said, here?s my recommendation for 2012: Follow the code of ethics set out by the Hobos well over a hundred years ago. If you do, chances are, you?ll do better, won?t get into trouble, and more than likely will have a good year, personally, professionally, and financially.

I?m going to try it in 2012. Will you join me? And are there any additional codes that should be added? Leave them in the comments.

The Hobo Code of Ethics:

Decide your own life, don?t let another person run or rule you.
When in town, always respect the local law and officials, and try to be a gentleman at all times.
Don?t take advantage of someone who is in a vulnerable situation, locals or other hobos.
Always try to find work, even if temporary, and always seek out jobs nobody wants. By doing so you not only help a business along, but ensure employment should you return to that town again.
When no employment is available, make your own work by using your added talents at crafts.
Do not allow yourself to become a stupid drunk and set a bad example for locals? treatment of other hobos.
When jungling in town, respect handouts, do not wear them out, another hobo will be coming along who will need them as bad, if not worse than you.
Always respect nature, do not leave garbage where you are jungling.
If in a community jungle, always pitch in and help.
Try to stay clean, and boil up wherever possible.
When traveling, ride your train respectfully, take no personal chances, cause no problems with the operating crew or host railroad, act like an extra crew member.
Do not cause problems in a train yard, another hobo will be coming along who will need passage through that yard.
Do not allow other hobos to molest children, expose all molesters to authorities, they are the worst garbage to infest any society.
Help all runaway children, and try to induce them to return home.
Help your fellow hobos whenever and wherever needed, you may need their help someday.
If present at a hobo court and you have testimony, give it. Whether for or against the accused, your voice counts!

Isentress Approval Expanded to Include Children and Teens (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Approval for the HIV drug Isentress (raltegravir) has been expanded to include children and adolescents ages 2-18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

The drug is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor that helps slow the spread of the AIDS-causing virus throughout the body, the agency said in a news release. It was first approved for adults in October 2007.

The twice-daily pill is available in a chewable form for people aged 2 to 11, and in non-chewable form. Clinical testing of the drug among 96 children and teens with HIV-1 infection showed 53 percent of patients had undetectable blood HIV levels after 24 weeks, the FDA said.

The most common reported side effects of Isentress included trouble sleeping and headache.

The drug does not cure HIV infection, and patients must take Isentress continually to ensure ongoing reduction in HIV-related illness, the FDA stressed.

The drug is produced by Merck & Co., based in Whitehouse Station, N.J.

(AP) ? George Whitman's life was packed with the type of adventures that filled every nook and cranny of his bookshop, Paris' iconic English-language Shakespeare and Company.

A bohemian traveler, Whitman was once nursed to health by Mayans in the Yucatan during a 3,000-mile (5000-kilometer) trek across Latin America and sometimes bragged that he had lived in Greenland with a beautiful Eskimo woman.

At home, Whitman was best known as a pillar of Paris' literary scene. For more than half century, his eclectic Left Bank shop was a beacon for readers, who spent long hours browsing its overflowing shelves or curling up with a good book next to a drowsy cat.

Shakespeare and Company was also a haven for every author or would-be writer passing through the City of Light.

For them, Whitman reserved a welcome that turned Yeats' famous verse ? "Be not inhospitable to strangers / Lest they be angels in disguise" ? into deed: He took in aspiring writers as boarders in exchange for a helping hand in the store.

Whitman died Wednesday in his apartment above the bookstore, two days after his 98th birthday and two months after suffering a stroke, the store announced on its website.

He "showed incredible strength and determination up to the end" and read every day with his daughter, his friends and his cat and dog, according to the statement. "Nicknamed the Don Quixote of the Latin Quarter, George will be remembered for his free spirit, his eccentricity and his generosity."

The store was shuttered Wednesday, and longtime customers, students and anonymous book-lovers lit candles on its stoop to pay their respects.

The store will live on under the management of Whitman's daughter, Sylvia Whitman. In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this year, she summed up the unique store this way: "My father says it's a Socialist utopia masquerading as a bookstore."

Whitman was born on Dec. 12, 1913, in East Orange, New Jersey, although he grew up in Massachusetts.

His twin loves of the written word and foreign travel were nurtured early on, when his father, a physics professor who authored several science books, took the family along for a yearlong sabbatical at a Chinese university in 1925.

That was the first of a series of adventures that later saw Whitman wander Latin America, sail to Hawaii and hitch his way across the United States.

After graduating from Boston University with a degree in journalism in 1935, Whitman enlisted in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he was trained as a Medical Warrant Officer and treated the wounded at hospitals across Europe, according to the store's statement.

Whitman moved to Paris permanently under the GI Bill in 1948. Three years later, he founded his bookshop in a rickety old building directly across the Seine River from Notre Dame cathedral. Initially baptized "Le Mistral" after the blustering winds that blow in off the Mediterranean, the shop's name was later changed.

The original Shakespeare and Company bookstore came from legendary literary matron Sylvia Beach, and the place was a magnet for English-speaking expats like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. She opened that store in the early 1920s in a Left Bank district not far from its current home, on the rue de l'Odeon. The shop gained fame by publishing Irish writer James Joyce's banned book "Ulysses."

World War II forced it to close, and Whitman gave Shakespeare and Company a new life in new digs in 1951.

Over the decades, Whitman's refuge for literary souls from far and wide became a Paris institution. It's widely regarded as an honor for authors to give a reading at the store, where eager listeners jostle for a spot among the stacks of first, second- and thirdhand books lining the walls and floors.

Whitman was made an officer of arts and letters by the French Culture Ministry in 2006.

He is to be buried in the city's venerable Pere Lachaise cemetery, where the remains of literary giants including Oscar Wilde, Balzac and French poet Guillaume Apollinaire rest, the posting said. The date of the funeral has not yet been set.
