Sketchy reports emerge on alleged high school gunman

A student who was nicked in the ear Monday during a shooting in a high school cafeteria in Chardon, Ohio, has identified the teen gunman as a fellow student who had ?got into a gothic phase? in recent years.

Nate Mueller, a student at Chardon High School, told NBC affiliate WKYC.com that he was sitting in the cafeteria at a table with three of the victims and was grazed in the ear by one of the bullets as he turned away from the gunman. He said he was friends with the suspect until the end of eighth grade.

?He kind of got into the gothic phase and kind of silenced himself from his friends,? Mueller said. ?But I mean, he still had friends. He was still a nice kid ? I don?t think anybody really ever expected it to be him. We didn?t think he would hurt anybody.?

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) ? Republican presidential contenders Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney wooed Michigan voters in appearances that were vastly different both in substance and in style ? and that illustrated the contrasts between the two front-runners for the GOP presidential nomination.

Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator pitching blue-collar populism and his Christian faith, used a visit to a nightclub Sunday on the outskirts of this town to outline a vision of American greatness driven by the workers who he says built the country.

"We know what works in America. Bottom up," Santorum told the 600 people in his audience, which included many people still dressed in their church clothes, as well as others wearing Detroit Red Wings jackets and camouflage hunting caps. He spoke for nearly an hour from a podium before taking questions. The crowd whistled, cheered and shouted back, running through the Declaration of Independence like a call-and-answer sports cheer.

"They are endowed by their ..." Santorum started. "CREATOR!" the crowd shouted back. When a young girl standing near the stage piped up: "You should be president!" Santorum smiled and thanked her. "Out of the mouths of babes," he said to the crowd, easily referencing Matthew 21:16.

A bit later at a soaring ballroom in the Park Place Hotel downtown, a state representative and a congressman stalled for about 45 minutes before Romney stepped onto the stage at the front of the room, an enormous campaign sign hanging behind him. The former Massachusetts governor spoke for about 20 minutes, offering his standard campaign speech with some added focus on his Michigan roots.

"The right course for America is to believe in free people and free enterprises ? and I do and I will," Romney told the crowd of about 700. He cited the "pioneers and innovators" who helped America thrive and said: "Their success did not make us poorer. Their success made us better off!" He barely mentioned religion, stopping only to emphasize the reference to the creator in the Declaration of Independence and citing the motto, "In God We Trust." He took no questions from his crowd, made up of men in jackets and one with a ball cap advertising the Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses at the nearby Grand Traverse Resort.

How Romney and Santorum court Michigan voters ? and who they're targeting ? ahead of Tuesday's primary illustrates the differences between Romney, for more than a year considered the Republican to beat, and Santorum, his current top challenger for the GOP nomination. Polls show the two men in a close race in this struggling Rust Belt state as both try to win over the thousands of voters who have been out of work for years as their state has struggled to replace manufacturing jobs that powered its economy for decades.

Santorum, a strict Catholic who wears sweater vests and highlights his background as the senator from another suffering manufacturing state, Pennsylvania, is directly appealing to the Michigan's vibrant tea party movement and religious social conservatives. Romney, a multimillionaire former business executive and a Mormon, is stressing his birth and upbringing in this state, playing to the Republican establishment that helped his father become governor decades ago.

In primaries and caucuses that already have been held, exit and entrance polls show Romney has done far better among higher income voters than he has with those who make less than $50,000 a year. And people who don't identify themselves as evangelical Christians backed him in much higher numbers than those who say they are evangelical.

Playing to that divide, Santorum is selling himself as the conservative crusader, a deeply religious man from a blue-collar state who will go to Washington and stand fast against the cultural and economic forces that he says are encroaching on traditional families and manufacturing jobs.

"More people go to church on Sunday than go to all the professional sporting events combined in a year," Santorum says, dubbing his jobs plan "supply side economics for the working man."

"There are a lot of people in this country who want to use their hands and their minds together to make something," Santorum said Saturday in St. Clair Shores, where he appeared with almost no senior advisers in tow. "That's their vocation ? that's what they were made to do, that's what they want to do, that's what they love doing. . And guess what, there's less and less chance to do that."

Santorum's policies echo this philosophy. He's proposing cutting the corporate tax to 17 percent from 35 percent, and slashing corporate taxes for manufacturers to zero, a move he says will help bring back blue collar jobs. He barely mentions the labor unions that helped keep those jobs well-paying.

Romney almost always focuses on his general economic message.

"If you want someone who will dramatically and fundamentally change Washington and bring you less government and more jobs, then I'm you're guy," Romney said Sunday as he has on numerous occasions. He earned more laughter than usual for mentioning his boyhood cross-country road trips in his parents' Rambler, the audience obviously familiar with the old model of car his father retooled when he was running American Motors. Later, he posed for pictures and signed autographs.

There are other differences.

Romney's interactions with voters throughout his events are shorter and much less frequent than Santorum's.

Santorum will hold court just about anywhere that will allow him, including churches, while Romney hosts many of his events at small business and local factories, where he'll often tour the facility with the company's owner, founder or CEO before speaking with a group of the company's workers ? and a bank of local TV cameras.

When a reporter mingled with the crowd and approached Santorum after Sunday's event, the candidate stopped to answer a question about whether he supports raising the minimum wage along with inflation, as Romney has said he does. Romney hasn't responded to questions from the national traveling press corps in 19 days, and attempts to approach him after campaign events are met with a smile ? and no other response.

Adobe launched its Touch suite of apps for Android (pictured above) months ago, but it looks like the company is now ready to introduce Photoshop Touch for the iPad 2. The app is available now in the New Zealand iTunes App Store and should be making its way across the globe soon. According to the iTunes description, Photoshop Touch features the standard PS features like layers, selection tools, filters, and adjustments, as well as step-by-step tutorials and uploading to Adobe Creative Cloud. Canadian sled dog killings prompt new rules

The government of British Columbia, Canada has published new regulations governing the handling of sled dogs ? a move prompted by a grisly 2010 case?in which a tourism company near Whistler killed as many as 100 animals that become "surplus," amid slumping business.

The Sled Dog Code of Practice is?a step ? a small one, according to critics ? toward addressing problems in?competitive and entertainment dog sledding that is mostly unseen.

"The problem with this whole issue is these (breeding and training) operations are out of the public eye," said Debra Probert, executive director of the Vancouver Humane Society. "People see the dogs in public, but they don?t see what goes on behind the scenes."

The sled dog slaughter came to light only when?one of the employees of Howling Dog Tours Whistler Ltd.?who were charged with killing the dogs?by shooting them and slitting their throats?applied for?compensation from the Workers? Compensation Board of British Columbia because he said he was suffering trauma from the task. The WorkSafeBC document explaining the decision to approve the compensation was leaked, making incident?public?in gruesome detail.

Animal rights critics have long criticized?major dog sled races ? especially the 1,100-mile Iditarod across Alaska, which?begins March 3. Mushers are adamant that dogs love the work, that they?are bred to do it, and that no one loves the dogs more than they do. But critics say pushing the dogs to run 100 miles a day for two weeks is brutal. One or more dogs die in the race?nearly every year, despite the volunteer veterinarians who attend to the animals.

The new British Columbia regulations are primarily?focused on the breeding, training, transportation and euthanizing of the animals. They spell out requirements for pens and tethers, exercise, socializing, grooming and nail care. And they say that euthanizing should not be a means of culling or population control.

The standards disappointed?some animal advocates, including the Vancouver Humane Society, which had advocated?banning sled dog racing.

And?some were outraged that the regulations spell out how sled dog?owners should euthanize dogs if they cannot race anymore and can't be placed in a new home. A diagram illustrates the proper way to?position a gun at?a?dog?s head to ensure a clean kill.

The Humane Society's Probert said that in any case the regulations and standards ?have no teeth? because no resources were allotted for their enforcement.

Nonetheless, the British Columbia regulations move the province ahead of other Canadian jurisdictions, where no specific regulations exist.

Within the United States, Alaska currently has among the weakest legal protections for animals, with only a few lines in state law that require "minimum conditions" for "adequate" nutrition and care. ?

Just last month, an Alaska?court found a sled dog breeder guilty of cruelty to animals after local authorities found 19 dead dogs and 168 more severely malnourished at his operation in Willow. Frank Rich?was sentenced to 180 after pleading guilty to two counts of animal cruelty.

A task force has just started formulating standards to elaborate on the law.

"The challenge is to make them broad enough to encompass all sorts of dog lifestyles," including athletes like sled dogs, said Jay Fuller, veterinarian for the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. "We?d like to make clear standards for what is acceptable."?

There is no question of barring dog sledding, which is protected by state law, he said.

?Any regulations we adopt have to be consistent with state law, and the law says (the competitions) are OK,??Fuller said.

"What I hope is that there will be a universal standard of care for all dogs," said Maureen O?Nell, executive director of the Alaska Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, who is taking part in the meetings. She said?that?sled dogs are a particularly sensitive case, and some would like to create special rules for them.

"The mushers are a strong community and I think there has been hesitation to what might somehow be perceived as anti-mushing,? she said.

After the dog?slaughter case in British Columbia, which emerged shortly after Whistler hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics, the dog sledding business took a hit.

"When the incident occurred ? it was a black eye not only for dog sledding but for Whistler," said Craig Beattie, general manager of Canadian Snowmobile, a Whistler company that provides outdoor adventures, including dogsledding tours. In order to reassure customers, he opened up his company's kennels to them and promised them?full refunds if they felt there was anything amiss.

He said the standards mandated by the government were already in place for their sled dogs, and he said he?hopes they will be enforced elsewhere.

"I think it will be way better for the animals, and for the people," said Beattie. "Obviously, the negativity will decrease toward the dog sledding."

We played with the idea of air mail rather than email and ordered a bunch of plain balsa wood gliders form the same company that made them when we were kids. We designed and wrote copy to silk screen on the actual plane and its plastic packaging.

Client Gift: Robot

Each holiday season, we try to present our clients with a thank you that goes beyond an e-card. Something that is both, unique and engaging. A gift that they would actually keep and at the same time keep us top-of-mind.

While on a recent trip to New York we came across a cool wooden puzzle and it immediately struck a chord. The robot puzzle was designed by Robert Weeks for Areaware and it addressed all our requirements for an interesting gift. We ordered a bunch of them and then designed, silk screened, hand trimmed and folded the boxes. The ?branding? exercise didn?t stop there. We proceeded to brand our logo directly onto the wood puzzle with heat branding iron. The process took a month to complete on the side while working on client projects. The piece has been well received thus far, with everyone figuring out how to expand the little guy. Getting him back into his original cube state is another matter entirely.

This was our first Touchwood Design gift and it goes way back. It set the tone for all others promos and gifts to follow.

I had collected a bunch of wood from an old house that was being torn down. The 2?4 beams had a nice aged look to them so I thought of making them into candle holders. We made a bunch and created funny labels with clever anecdotes and sent them off. They were well received and most are still in use today. We had a few leftovers and ended up selling them in a local store. I couldn?t keep up with demand and final called it quits. By that time this style of candle holder had become quite popular.

US, N. Korea in first nuclear talks since Kim death

BEIJING?? Amid cautious optimism, U.S. and North Korean envoys met Thursday for their first talks on dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear programs since the death of the country's longtime leader Kim Jong Il.

The discussions will be closely watched for signs of a more cooperative approach from North Korea, which stands to gain food aid, economic help, and diplomatic concessions in return for taking steps to end its efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

The countries were on the verge of a deal to have Washington provide food if Pyongyang suspends its uranium enrichment program when the agreement was upended by Kim's Dec. 17 death.

"Today is, as we say, 'game day.' We will have an opportunity to meet with First Vice Foreign Minister Kim and his team," U.S. envoy Glyn Davies said before the start of morning talks with Kim Kye Gwan at the North Korean Embassy in Beijing.

The two will hold a second session Thursday afternoon at the U.S. Embassy.

The talks in Beijing, the third round since July, are ostensibly aimed at restarting wider six-nation disarmament negotiations that also involve China, Japan, Russia and South Korea. Pyongyang walked away from those talks in 2009 and later exploded its second nuclear device.

Additional steps may still be needed before a resumption of the six-nation talks. The North may first request food shipments, while the U.S. and its allies want assurances Pyongyang is committed to making progress on past nuclear commitments.

The United States has also said that better ties between North Korea and U.S. ally South Korea are crucial. North Korea has rejected South Korean offers to talk in recent weeks, and animosity between the rivals still lingers from violence in 2010: a North Korean artillery attack in November killed four South Koreans on a front-line island, and Seoul blames North Korea for the sinking of a warship that killed 46 sailors earlier that year. Pyongyang denies responsibility for the sinking.

Davies said it was a good sign that North Korea had agreed to re-enter talks so soon after the Kim's death amid a transfer of power to his young son, Kim Jong Un, and a coterie of advisers.

Davies said a key point was to see if North Korea was willing to fulfill obligations made in a joint statement in September 2005, which committed North Korea to abandoning its nuclear program in exchange for aid and pledges that Washington wouldn't seek the regime's ouster.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said in Washington that the United States was "cautiously optimistic" about the talks.

The six-nation talks, once restarted, would be aimed at dismantling North Korea's remaining nuclear programs in exchange for what would likely involve even greater donations of aid.

Toner said food assistance would be discussed in the talks, but that the United States has some concerns it wants North Korea to address. He did not say what those concerns were, but analysts have said North Korea must agree to have U.N. watchdogs monitor any freeze of its uranium enrichment. Otherwise it could backtrack ? as it has done with previous agreements.

Worries about North Korea's nuclear capability took on renewed urgency in November 2010 when the country disclosed a uranium enrichment facility that could give it a second route to manufacture nuclear weapons, in addition to its existing plutonium-based program.

As the envoys began their talks, North Korea's state media criticized next month's Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, which is expected to draw dozens of world leaders, including President Barack Obama, to discuss nuclear terrorism and safety.

"It is illogical to discuss the 'nuclear security' issue in South Korea, the U.S. nuclear advance base and a hotbed of nuclear war," the North's official Korean Central News Agency said in a commentary Thursday.

The North said it is "worse still" to hold the summit during joint U.S.-South Korean military drills scheduled for the next few months, which the commentary called "rehearsals for a nuclear war against the North."

Seoul and Washington say the annual drills are defensive in nature.

We're "so, so excited," Kourtney says, while boyfriend Scott Disick - who apparently has NOT abandoned his baby mama - adds:

"I even wanted a girl the first time - and then we had Mason and it couldn't have been any better... We're very fortunate to have the combination that everyone wishes for."

Does the couple have a name selected?

"We actually have one name that we both love, but I'm not sure," Kardashian said. "I feel like you don't really know until after you meet the baby."

Georgia commuter bus driver stabbed with pen

KENNESAW, Ga. (AP) ? Georgia authorities say a commuter bus driver is recovering after being stabbed repeatedly with a pen when he tried to break up a fight between passengers that involved a dispute over a cell phone.

Police say the melee on the Cobb County Transit bus occurred Monday afternoon in Kennesaw, about 25 miles northwest of Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/xIVojx) that the driver went to the back of the bus to keep the quarrel from escalating, and a woman pulled a knife.

Authorities say other passengers were able to get the knife away from the woman, but police say she grabbed a pen from the bus driver's pocket and stabbed him several times.

The bus driver's condition was not immediately known.

Jennifer Evans Gardner: Where's My F-ing Casserole?

I live in a wonderful community. When someone gets cancer, has a death in the family, or gets ankle surgery, friends and neighbors are there for each other. Upon learning of a tough situation, someone sends an email out, and within minutes, a long list of folks have signed up to deliver meals to that family for weeks, sometimes months. It's amazing. Over the years, I've cooked and delivered my share of casseroles in hopes of lightening someone else's burden. That's what we do. We're human beings, after all.

However, when someone gets divorced, it's a different story.

Last year, my husband of 14 years and I separated, which was in itself miserable, but even more so because we have a child together, one who was just turning from tween to teen. It's already an awkward age, but watching your parents split up and having to move out of your home during this period makes ankle surgery look like a cake walk.

Divorce is horrible. No matter who left whom, or how unhappy a couple seemed to be before they split, it's horrible. In fact, it's more horrible than anything I had imagined. So horrible that I soon began to call and apologize to friends who had been through it. Who knew that it could be so agonizing, heartbreaking, and just mind-numbingly painful, both emotionally and physically?

I knew now. I lost sleep and lost weight, and could barely get my son to school. I had trouble focusing, as my mind would forever drift back to painful thoughts. If I hadn't had work to do, I wouldn't have bothered getting out of bed. As a freelance writer, I began to get multiple assignments for the wedding section of a newspaper, interviewing young brides in love. The universe has a great sense of humor.

I couldn't eat, so obviously, I couldn't cook either, but somehow between crying jags in my bedroom, unpacking a house, and setting up new electric and cable accounts, I was able to get dinner to my son. Thank God for Daily Grill and Chipotle takeout -- and I love you, Trader Joe's frozen section. One morning, after weeks of this, I dragged my exhausted body into the kitchen to make breakfast, checking my email while waiting for the waffle to pop up from the toaster. First up: a mass email asking for casseroles for the family of a relative who had passed away.

Go ahead, crucify me, but the thought bubble that popped up wasn't pretty. My son hadn't had a home-cooked meal in ions, and I was certainly in no shape to be near sharp knives and a hot oven. "Where's my f-ing casserole?" the voice in my head said. After all, I was mourning a death, too: the death of my marriage; the death of my life as I knew it, the death of our family; the death of the happily-ever-after dream.

To add insult to injury (yes, the injury of not getting a f-ing casserole), some of our friends scattered in the wake of our separation. You could almost hear the whooshing sound as they all took one giant step back. Is it possible that divorce is an even more awkward subject than death? Or do some just think it's contagious? One can't help but suspect there is judgment... after all, cancer and death are an act of God, but divorce is, well... a choice, right? Yet those who've never been through it are surely aware that one never gets married to get divorced... that (unless you are a celebrity) it's almost always a last resort.

Of course, not everyone bolted. I do have amazing friends who stepped up to the plate, who wiped away my tears, who peeled me off the floor, who sat with me at that first "single-mom-alone-at-a-bar mitzvah" episode, and who - when the bar mitzvah photographer asked (camera in hand), "who do you belong to?" answered, "Me! She belongs to me!" To be fair, that friend knew what I was going through. She'd been through a divorce herself.

So here's a thought. The next time someone you know is going through a divorce, no matter how awkward it might feel, pick up the phone and maybe just check on them. Check on their family. Check on their former spouse. And for the love of God, bring them a f-ing casserole.
