Uh oh! Mac users who occasionally dip their toes into the sea of Microsoft products are at risk of becoming the victims of targeted security attacks, thanks to a security hole in Microsoft Office for Mac.

Dennis Fisher of the Kaspersky Lab Security News Service reports that?researchers recently discovered a new security attack which relies on "two separate pieces of malware, a malicious Word document and some techniques for maintaining persistence on compromised machines." These attacks are specifically?targeting Mac users, he explains.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Despite the attack method being rather new, it actually relies on a three-year-old vulnerability in the way Microsoft Office for Mac deals with certain types of Microsoft Word Files. According to Jaime Blasco of AlienVault Labs, an attacker needs to send a "specially crafted Word file" to a user and have some patience. Once that individual opens the malicious file, the attacker could take complete control of his or her system:

An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

As usual, extreme vigilance is the best way to avoid becoming a victim to?a security attack such as this one. Be careful when opening files you've received. Are they from individuals you trust? Are they files you've been expecting? Use common sense and don't immediately peek at every random file.

Fossil discovery could unravel mystery of how humans learned to walk (+video)

The discovery of foot bone fossils from an early hominin may help unlock the mystery of how humans learned to walk upright. ?

Ancient foot bones from a recently discovered pre-human species, which had opposable big toes like a gorilla's, could shed light on how the ancestors of humanity came to walk upright, researchers say.

Skip to next paragraph A few million years ago, our ancestors stopped climbing trees and started walking upright, on two feet. To work out how and when this happened, researchers look for fossils -- and recently they found a surprising set of foot bones in Ethiopia. The foot is about 3.4 million years old, making it roughly the same age as 'Lucy' and her species, Australopithecus afarensis. But while Lucy's species had feet much like modern humans, the new foot has an opposable big toe, like a chimp. So do the foot bones represent a new species of hominin? Watch the video and decide.

Humans dominate the planet partly because walking upright frees their hands for tool use. Among the earliest known relatives of humanity to walk upright was Australopithecus afarensis, the species including the famed "Lucy." This hominin is a leading candidate for direct ancestor of the human lineage, living about 2.9 million to 3.8 million years ago in East Africa.

Although Lucy and her kin were bipedal, there is debate about how much they depended on life in trees. Now scientists also have fossils of a hitherto unknown species of hominin that lived about the same time and place as Australopithecus afarensis. Judging by its feet, this newfound relative of humanity was a tree-dweller ? which suggests that, in turn, Australopithecus afarensis adapted to life walking on the ground.

"In biology, if you have two closely related species that live close to each other, they may start to diverge in what niches they occupy," said researcher Bruce Latimer, a paleoanthropologist at Case Western Reserve University.

Since this newfound hominin possessed feet good for climbing trees, "it does really hammer home the idea that Australopithecus afarensis might have been a bipedal animal that committed itself to the ground and walking long distances," Latimer told LiveScience. [Photos of New Hominin Species]

The 3.4-million-year-old fossils were discovered in 2009 in a part of Ethiopia known as Burtele. Nowadays this area is hot and dry, with temperatures skyrocketing up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius). But "nearby fossils of fish, crocodiles and turtles and physical and chemical characteristics of sediments show the environment was a mosaic of river and delta channels adjacent to an open woodland of trees and bushes," said fellow Case Western researcher Beverly Saylor.

Scientists have long argued that Australopithecus afarensis was the only pre-human species between 3 million and 4 million years ago. These new fossils of an unknown hominin species are the first incontrovertible evidence that at least two pre-human species lived at the same time and place around 3.4 million years ago.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Weinstein Co. is moving past the R rating earned by its documentary "Bully" and plans to release the film unrated.

The company announced Monday that "Bully" will hit theaters March 30 without a rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, meaning some theater may choose not to show it.

The MPAA gave the film an R rating for language and declined to change it when the Weinstein Co. appealed. That inspired teen activist Katy Butler to start an online petition seeking a lower rating so more young people could see the movie.

She has collected more than 475,000 signatures so far and even met with MPAA officials earlier this month, but the group stood its ground and "Bully" remained rated R, which requires children under 17 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, told the Weinstein Co. that releasing the film unrated could result in theaters treating the teen-focused documentary as an NC-17 film, which means no one 17 and under can be admitted.

Stephen Bruno, president of marketing for the Weinstein Co, isn't too concerned.

"We believe theater owners everywhere will step up and do what's right for the benefit of all of the children out there who have been bullied or may have otherwise become bullies themselves," Bruno said Monday, adding that the company plans to make the film available to teachers, parents and students nationwide.

Filmmaker Lee Hirsch said he declined to edit the documentary's offensive language because it would diminish the painful reality of bullying.

"The small amount of language in the film that's responsible for the R rating is there because it's real. It's what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days," Hirsch said.

He expects many young people to see the film, "so it's up to the theaters to let them in."

The MPAA did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Monday.

Butler said she's pleased the film will maintain its original content.

"The MPAA said they wouldn't drop the 'R' rating unless this language was removed," she said. "But nothing can remove it from the halls and playgrounds of schools where bullied students hear it each day, except education and exposure."

Obama urges N. Korea to 'pursue peace'

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? In a direct challenge to North Korean leaders, President Barack Obama implored them "to have the courage to pursue peace" while warning of the wrath of the world if they don't. Failure, he said Monday, would mean a future without dignity, respect or hope for its people.

Obama stood by his pledge for a globe without nuclear weapons, declaring flatly that the United States has more than it needs and can cut its arsenal without weakening its security or that of its allies. That assessment put him on a collision course with congressional Republicans who say any significant cuts would undermine the U.S. ability to deter aggression.

As Obama spoke of peace in the midst of an international nuclear summit, tensions rose in the Korean peninsula. Seoul warned it might shoot down a North Korean rocket carrying a satellite if it violates South Korean territory. The United States maintains the launch amounts to a test of North Korea's rocketry.

In unusually personal terms, Obama said he spoke of his wish for further nuclear reductions as the president of the only nation ever to use nuclear weapons, as a commander whose country's nuclear codes are never far from his side, and as a protective father eager to erase the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Obama also met on the sidelines of the summit with outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Later he planned to sit down with Chinese President Hu Jintao, whom he was expected to press for help in dealing with North Korea.

Still, Obama aimed his most stern remarks to North Korea's leaders, saying the internationally isolated country needs to change its ways because continuing down the same path will lead to "more broken dreams" and "more isolation." His blunt remarks came a day after he visited the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea and described the experience as akin to witnessing a "time warp" of despair.

"By now it should be clear," he said. "Your provocations and pursuit of nuclear weapons have not achieved the security you seek, they have undermined it. Instead of the dignity you desire, you are more isolated."

Speaking at Hankuk University, Obama said that the international community has made progress in reducing the threat of nuclear material but says "we're under no illusions."

"Even as we have more work to do, we can already say with confidence that we have more nuclear weapons than we need," he said. "I firmly believe that we can ensure the security of the United States and our allies, maintain a strong deterrent against any threat, and still pursue further reductions in our nuclear arsenal."

Obama also reiterated his warning to Iran, which the U.S. and its allies contend is defying its international obligations by pursuing an illicit nuclear program. Obama said he would discuss Iran in meetings later in the day with the leaders of Russia and China.

"Iran's leaders must understand that there is no escaping the choice before it. Iran must act with the seriousness and sense of urgency that this moment demands," Obama said. "Iran must meet its obligations."

Facing down Iran and North Korea, Obama said a "new international norm" was emerging to deal with the two nations' intransigence. "Treaties are binding. Rules will be enforced. And violations will have consequences," Obama said. "Because we refuse to consign ourselves to a future where more and more regimes possess the world's most deadly weapons."

Obama said the U.S. was also moving forward with Russia to eliminate enough plutonium for about 17,000 nuclear weapons and turn it into electricity. And he heralded an earlier agreement with Russia to reduce nuclear arsenals under the New START Treaty, which Obama called "the most comprehensive arms control agreement in nearly two decades."

"When we're done, we'll have cut American and Russian deployed nuclear warheads to their lowest levels since the 1950s," he said.

Obama also prodded Russia in a new way, saying he would seek discussions with Moscow on an unprecedented front: reducing not only strategic nuclear warheads, but also tactical weapons and warheads in reserve. He said he planned to discuss that proposition with Putin when they meet in May.

Obama was to meet later Monday with outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Former leader Vladimir Putin returns to the presidency later this spring after winning an election held earlier this year.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? A fire tore through a two-story home that had no functioning smoke detectors Saturday in West Virginia's capital city, killing eight family members, including six children, the city's mayor said.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said he believed it was the city's deadliest fire in at least six decades. Jones said only one smoke detector was found in a cabinet, and it was not working.

In the yard of the home that sits on a corner in a neighborhood tightly packed with small houses, a children's picnic table, chairs and umbrella were overturned. The outside of the front of the home was blackened by the flames and smoke.

Jones said he was devastated by the news when he got the call sometime after the fire was reported around 3:30 a.m.

"I was with my children and I just grabbed them and hugged them, because I have a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old," he said. "I walked up there and caught a glimpse of some fatalities and it's something that's hard to grasp. The fact that there are (six) dead children, it's unimaginable."

Charleston Assistant Fire Chief Bob Sharp said two of those killed were adults, and all of the children who died were younger than 8.

In addition, one child was on life support at a hospital and not expected to survive, the mayor said.

Ten people were inside the home at the time of the fire and all were related, but Sharp wasn't sure how.

Neighbors indicated there had been a birthday party at the home Friday for one of the adults. Sharp said a couple of families may have been living in the home.

"We're not sure if all these people live here all the time or if it was a weekend thing," he said.

An adult female from the home went to a neighbor's house to report the fire. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Sharp said firefighters reduced the flames quickly. When they went inside, they immediately came across five victims and "started realizing there were a lot of people in this house, a lot of children."

Sharp said the fire seems to have started in the middle of the home's main level. The cause is under investigation.

Sharp said it was the deadliest fire in the city since seven firefighters perished in while battling a fire at a Woolworth department store in 1949.

"You can imagine how traumatizing that is to us and shocking to the community in general," he said.

Runaway planets ejected from galaxy at insane speeds

New evidence suggests that planets are being tossed out of the Milky Way at speeds comparable to the speed of light.

Planets in tight orbits around stars that get ejected from our galaxy may actually themselves be tossed out of the Milky Way at blisteringly fast speeds of up to 30 million miles per hour, or a fraction of the speed of light, a new study finds.

"These warp-speed planets would be some of the fastest objects in the galaxy, aside from photons and?particles like cosmic rays," said Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. "In terms of large, solid objects, they would be the fastest. It would take them 10 seconds or so to cross the diameter of the Earth."

In 2005, astronomers found evidence of a runaway star that was flying out of the?Milky Way galaxy?at a speed of 1.5 million mph (2.4 million kph). This hypervelocity star was part of a double-star system that wandered too close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The strong gravitational pull at the galactic center ripped the stars apart, sending one hurtling through space at high speeds, while capturing the other to stay in orbit around the massive black hole.

In the seven years since, 16 of these?hypervelocity stars?have been found, and Loeb and his colleagues began to wonder whether planets could also be sent tearing through space at such extreme velocities.

The researchers created simulations that examined what would happen if each star had at least one planet orbiting nearby. They found that up to 10 percent of planets tightly orbiting one of the stars could stay bound as the?star is flung outward. The other star that is captured by the black hole could also have its planet ripped away from it, and this planet would then be pitched into interstellar space at intensely fast speeds as well.

"We were trying to predict, if you have planets around each of the stars in the binary system, what fraction of the planets might go along with the hypervelocity star for the ride," Loeb told SPACE.com. "What we found is that some of them get expelled at high speeds, up to a few percent of the speed of light. Some of the planets get ripped apart from the host stars and get sent out at high speeds, and they also become hypervelocity planets this way."?

These planets would travel through space at unparalleled velocities, the researchers said.

Some of these sites even post the Terms of Service from sites like Tumblr or discuss Facebook?s ToS with an eye that they are the same. One of the reasons I singled out the ?sell? and ?otherwise exploit? portions of Pinterest?s terms is because although they are small words in a long document, they are hugely different and significant.

Sites like G+, Twitter, Facebook, deviantArt and Tumblr do take broad licence to modify and otherwise re-purpose content. ?Much of the reasons for that is it?s a way of keeping up with technology. ?Most social media sites have a mobile version, and these provisions are a way of addressing alterations to content for a different format. As I said in The Promise and Perils of Pinterest, there?s a lot to like about Pinterest ? and as with any website, content creators, whether writers, artists or podcasters have to do some risk assessment to see if putting each piece of content online is worth it. Risk assessment comes with being a creator whether you?re showing your work to an editor, a colleague, or the whole legion of intertubes.

Let me be clear: G+, Twitter, Facebook, deviantART, Flickr and Tumblr (as well as many many other social media and image-sharing sites) do not claim to right to ?sell? and ?otherwise exploit? your content. The idea that this was some sort of stock, boilerplate Terms of Service is wrong.

Pinterest responds?quietly

I indicated in my previous post?s comments that I had been contacted by a community manager at Pinterest; the initial answers were sontradictory enough to cause me to delete the content of my own Pinterest boards. Later I was contacted by a PR representative for the company. It was indicated by the community manager and PR rep that Pinterest was looking to change the Terms of Service and remove the ?sell? portion. Frustratingly, this was all to be off the record. Meanwhile, Kalliopi?s post rocketed up a few thousand Facebook ?likes?, hundreds of tweets sharing our posts were retweeted, Nieman Journalism Lab caught sight of the issue and the Huffington Post carried Kalliopi?s analysis of the Pinterest Terms of Service.

Pinterest Changes Terms of Service

As of Friday 23rd of March 2012, Ben Silbermann and his team announced on their blog, among other changes:

?Our original Terms stated that by posting content to Pinterest you grant Pinterest the right for us to sell your content. Selling content was never our intention and we removed this from our updated Terms.?

The new Terms of Service will officially take effect April 6 2012 and Pinterest will finally actually be similar to other social media and image sharing sites.

For all the people who wrote blog posts, tweets, emails and comments about Pinterest and their over-reaching Terms, you knew it can make a difference. Speak up!

For the people who posted the ?but all sites are the same? sentiments, even if that were true, does that mean you have to roll over and take it? ?Most social media savvy sites like Pinterest do actually listen to their users ? they understand the two-way street.

Will I restore content to my boards? ?We all have several days to read over the new Terms of Service and figure that out.

FTSE weak as miners drop after China data

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's top share index fell back in early trade on Thursday led by weakness in mining stocks after data showed China's economic momentum slowing, fuelling worries over the outlook for the global economy.

At 0900 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was down 47.17 points, or 0.8 percent, at 5,844.78, having ended flat after a volatile session on Wednesday.

Miners were the biggest drag on the blue chip index, as demand concerns were revived by the HSBC flash purchasing managers index - the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity - which fell back to 48.1 from February's four-month high of 49.6.

Rio Tinto shed 2.3 percent with copper prices dropping 1.6 percent as the China data added to ongoing consumption worries after disappointing U.S. data on Wednesday.

"After the U.S. existing home sales numbers yesterday, news Chinese factory activity shrank again has added to the uncertainty on the global economy, putting pressure particularly on the mining sector," said Mike Mason, trader at Sucden Financial.

Precious metals miner Randgold Resources was the biggest FTSE 100 faller, dropping 13.1 percent, having been a good gainer on Wednesday, with the stock unsettled by news that renegade Malian soldiers had declared they had seized power of the African country in a coup.

Randgold revealed late on Wednesday it had signed a convention with the Malian government for a new mine at the Gounkoto deposit in the country.

Weak energy stocks also weighed, led by BG Group down 0.9 percent, as crude prices fell 1.3 percent, also on worries about possible slowing demand from China, the world's second-biggest oil consumer.

Oil services group Amec was another big blue chip faller, down 2.3 percent as JPMorgan Cazenove downgraded its rating for the firm to "neutral" in a sector review.

RETAIL REVERSAL

News from British retailers was not so favourable on Thursday, after they received a boost on Wednesday from positive results from J Sainsbury, with cautious outlook comment from both Kingfisher and Next disappointing.

DIY stores group Kingfisher shed 0.8 percent as it launched a drive to improve profit margins to help it cope against a tough economic background, as its annual profits beat forecasts with a 20 percent rise.

"All eyes will be on the degree to which common sourcing can drive gross margin improvement. Whilst the 7 percent target is ahead of our expectations, the resulting 300 million pounds uplift in EBIT suggest the sourcing gains are towards the bottom end of our forecasts," Oriel Securities said in a note repeating its "reduce" rating on Kingfisher.

Clothing retailer Next shed 0.7 percent as it said it was being cautious in its budgeting for the 2012-13 year as the outlook is "very uncertain", highlighting concerns over employment, credit availability and the euro zone debt crisis.

British retail sales numbers for February will be released at 0930 GMT, with a headline monthly fall of 0.4 percent forecast, after a 0.9 percent rise in January, giving annualised growth of 2.5 percent, up from 2.0 percent previously.

There were only a few FTSE 100 gainers early on.

Mobile phones group Vodafone was the biggest riser, up 0.8 percent, extending its advance after being upgraded to Goldman Sachs' "conviction buy" list on Wednesday.

United Utilities was also in demand, up 0.3 percent as Britain's largest listed water utility said it was on track to report a good underlying performance for the full year, with sales rising in line with market estimates.

And drugmaker AstraZeneca, up 0.3 percent was supported by an upgrade to "buy" from Liberum Capital.
