Anime-based Romance Private Roleplay. Interested?

Okay, seeing as I have quite a lot of free time lately, and have been watching a lot of romcom animes and playing otome games.. >o

I've decided it's time to pick up a roleplay! More specifically a private roleplay! And here, I have two plots in mind~

Inu X Boku SS
This is an anime I watched recently and I loved it! The plot is being extrapolated with new characters since playing canon characters can be a bit dull (boo boo :T). Of course, this will be focusing more on the relationship between our characters rather than the whole building, though NPC characters would be okay once in awhile. If you don't know the story, here's a short rundown:

The Maison de Ayakashi, or better known as the Ayakashikan, is a high security apartment building. To outsiders, the Ayakashikan is simply a well-known residence for the most elite of the wealthy. It is rumoured that to be eligible for residence, a rigorous and extremely difficult selection process is undergone. But what most people don't know is that the building actually, in fact, houses humans with demon ancestors, or Youkai.

Since those with Youkai blood most commonly belong to rich families and are sheltered from the world like a treasure, the existence of the Youkai is hidden and kept secret. The Youkai are most commonly the demons from Japanese legends. It is said that they are reincarnations of their ancestors, which is why they retain their powers, and that their lineage will continue after their death.

Those living at the Ayakashikan are also assigned a Secret Service Bodyguard, also from demon descent. Their job is to solemnly serve and protect their designated partner, 24 hours a day. This includes food and drink, transportation as well as safety from humans and demons.

Demon x Angel
I remember roleplaying in this roleplay called My Fireflies and I loved it! Unfortunately, the roleplay died ;-; The main gist of the plot is that Heaven and Hell have been enduring war after war, and the repercussions have been disastrous. With God wanting to put an end to the chaos and the Devil simply wanting to torment his Maker, they have come to an agreement. Selected devils and angels are to be wed, to heal the wounds between the races. They must also reside in the land between Heaven and Hell.. the Land of Gray.

I don't have many requirements, I only ask that you are literate (meaning being able to write a minimum of 3 paragraphs per post)and creative! Also, I don't mind playing either gender or role~ So if you're interested, please drop me a post or PM me! ^o^

University of Memphis tuition up 7 percent to $4,117 per semester

University of Memphis is hiking its tuition again, this time by 7 percent for the 2012-13 school year.

The Tennessee Board of Regents has approved tuition hikes that will result in a 7 percent increase for the University of Memphis?

The new tuition rates are effective for the 2012-13 school year.

Students taking 15 hours at the University of Memphis will pay $4,117 per semester, while Southwest students will pay $1,858, according to the Board of Regents. Students at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will see a 7.3 percent tuition increase this fall to $8,357 per semester.

The Board of Regents has increased tuition for the last three years; U of M saw its tuition rise 11 percent last year based on a 12-hour schedule.

The tuition increases have coincided with reductions in state funding to schools. Tennessee has cut funding to the U of M by $41.7 million in the last four years. Another $1.8 million will be cut this fiscal year.

?Adequate funding is necessary for the University of Memphis to continue its primary goals of providing a high quality education and graduating our students in a timely manner,? Shirley Raines, president of the University of Memphis, said in a statement. ?Still, it is unfortunate that our students must continue to bear the responsibility for closing the gap in state funding and our funding requirements.?

Treatment time for this common cancer could be cut in half

Accelerated whole breast irradiation after lumpectomy is an effective treatment for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a very common early stage and noninvasive form of breast cancer, meaning many more breast cancer patients could see their treatment times reduced by half, according to a study in the June issue of the International Journal of Radiation OncologyBiologyPhysics, the official scientific journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

The widespread use of mammography beginning in the early 1980s has led to a dramatic increase in the number of DCIS instances detected, making this one of the most common forms of breast cancer. Multiple studies have proven that lumpectomy plus radiation significantly reduces the risk of recurrence in both noninvasive and invasive breast cancers and for DCIS, the current standard of treatment is lumpectomy followed by five to six weeks of whole breast radiation.

However, for invasive cancers, the use of an accelerated form of radiation that increases the strength of the dose per treatment and uses fewer treatment sessions overall has been well-established as effective, providing patients with a shorter treatment time with similar positive results. The effectiveness of an accelerated treatment time has not been established for DCIS.

Researchers in the study followed 145 DCIS patients who were treated with lumpectomy and accelerated whole breast irradiation or lumpectomy with accelerated whole breast irradiation plus an additional daily boost. At five years post-treatment, only 4.1 percent of patients experienced a recurrence, which is comparable to the five to 10 percent recurrence rate demonstrated in randomized trials for patients receiving standard radiation.

"The results of our study suggest that DCIS patients can be safely treated with a shorter regimen of radiotherapy," Silvia Formenti, MD, senior author of the study and a radiation oncologist at New York University School of Medicine, said. "This is good news for many breast cancer patients who would prefer to receive their treatments in a shorter period of time, but also want the peace of mind that they are receiving the most effective treatment available."

Report: 'The Office' losing B.J. Novak as a regular

Mitchell Haaseth / NBC

B.J. Novak as Ryan Howard on "The Office."

By Cody Delistraty

Dunder-Mifflin temp Ryan Howard is cutting back his hours at ?The Office,? according to TV Guide. While the man behind the character, B.J. Novak, will no longer be a full-time presence, he still plans to pop in as Ryan, as a writer and as a director for ?The Office? in episodes to come, according to the magazine.

NBC declined to comment, but a source with ties to the show confirmed the news to us.

(TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Novak?s reduced role closely follows his good friend Mindy Kaling?s decision to leave ?The Office? and begin her own show, ?The Mindy Project,? which premieres in the fall on Fox. The departure of Kaling?s Kelly Kapoor and Novak?s smaller park mark big changes for ?The Office? which saw its marquee character, Michael Scott (Steve Carell), leave Pennsylvania for Colorado in season seven?s humanizing, heartbreaking finale, ?Goodbye Michael.?

As for how Ryan will end up at "The Office" less, details haven?t been revealed. Michael had a final ?That?s what she said? when Pam Halpert (n?e Beesly, played by Jenna Fisher) wished him a tearful farewell at the airport, so we?re hoping for a similarly apt moment for Ryan. Perhaps he?ll be fired for arson ? la season five?s ?The Fire??

Ryan?s time at Dunder-Mifflin was a bit of a roller coaster. Beginning as a temp, he quickly moved up the ranks, becoming the youngest vice president in the company?s history. It?s an understatement to say the promotion went to the youngster?s head, though, as he became ?The Office?s? most condescending jerk and a lover of cocaine before being violently yanked down to earth when his ?business tactics? were exposed as fraud.

Yet, Michael rehired him as a temp, so back from New York to Scranton Ryan came. Sporting a new ?hipster? wardrobe with a slew of Macy?s-quality cardigans and chunky-framed glasses, he attempted the social media start-up WUPFH and got back to flirting with Kelly and her obsessive affections.

With such a great character stepping back from the show, it?s hard to face the fact that James Spader?s Robert California will also be exiting while John Krasinski?s Jim Halpert and Ed Helms? Andy Bernard will be scaling back on their episode appearances in light of their increasingly busy movie schedules.

For all of us ?Office? fans, Ryan and his ever-odd antics will be greatly missed.

With so many characters leaving and stepping back, who do you think "The Office" can't do without? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Some Thoughts on Overseas Investing in U.S. Real Estate - Yes

Overseas investor buying of U.S. real estate is a consequence of trade deficits that have built up huge surpluses of U.S. dollars that must be recycled into dollar-denominated assets. Perhaps we should welcome the investment as both necessary and positive.

What few media pundits seem to grasp is that when our trade deficits transfer hundreds of billions of dollars to other nations, those dollars have to end up in dollar-denominated assets like bonds, stocks or real estate.?Mish of?Mish's Global Economic Analysis?has tirelessly explained this dynamic many times: when U.S. dollars (USD) end up in another country as a result of our gargantuan trade deficits, the dollars don't just vanish into some other currency. One way or another, they have to flow into one dollar-denominated asset or another.

Many people have missed the difference between dollars used to settle accounts and dollars held as a result of trade deficits.?Many of those emotionally wedded to the belief that the U.S. dollar is doomed gleefully grabbed onto the news that China and Japan will swap currencies directly (yen and yuan) rather than intermediate the trade with U.S. dollars. This was mistakenly seen as a nail in the coffin of the USD.

If I am in Japan and I have yuan due to trade with China, and I want to exchange those yuan for yen, I only need USD for about 10 seconds to intermediate the exchange. Cutting out the USD simply cut the exchange costs and lowered the daily trading volume of the USD.

This reduction in the transactions needed to exchange yuan for yen did nothing to change the dollars held by China or Japan as a result of their trade surpluses with the U.S.

This also didn't lower the amount of assets or credit (debt) denominated in USD. In other words, the effect on the value of the dollar is trivial.

No matter how many exchanges the USD sitting in overseas accounts are pushed through, they still end up in dollar-denominated assets somewhere.?If China exchanges its surplus USD to Saudi Arabia in exchange for oil, the USD didn't vanish or become yuan: the USD were simply transferred to Saudi Arabia, which can either exchange them with another nation for goods or services, or they use the USD to buy dollar-denominated assets: bonds, stocks, U.S.-based companies, land in the U.S., etc.

Every time overseas holders of dollars start using their monumental stash of USD to buy real estate in the U.S., domestic pundits freak out and declare "X is buying America!"?What the xenophobic pundits fail to understand is the overseas holders of USD have to buy something with their surplus dollars, and if they're sick and tired of buying negative-yield bonds (i.e. the bond yield is lower than inflation) then they have little other choice but to buy land, buildings and businesses in the U.S.

The largest overseas owners of U.S. assets have long been the Europeans, chiefly the English.?Tremendous sums have been sunk into the relative safety and dynamism of the U.S. economy, going back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

"Foreign investment in the U.S. last year totaled $234 billion, a 14% jump over $205.8 billion in 2010, with around?two-thirds of the cash coming from Europe."

There is an element of implicit racism at work when the cries of "we're being taken over" swell after the Japanese or Chinese make a signature purchase of U.S. assets: beneath the surface, the message is clear: it's OK for Caucasian Europeans to buy huge swaths of American land and built capital, but not OK for Asians to own the same percentage of assets.

Let me put this bluntly: if you don't want overseas investors to buy American assets, then stop running gigantic trade deficits with them.?Once you transfer hundreds of billions of dollars a year, each and every year, to overseas accounts, the owners of those USD will have to buy something denominated in dollars. And since we presumably made those trades of our own free will to our own benefit, then it's hardly cricket to get all hot and bothered when those owners of USD seek the same thing we do: assets that return a higher yield at a lower risk.

I have raised hackles by suggesting that the U.S. remains a very attractive "safe haven" for overseas holders of USD.?The people who are emotionally attached to the "dollar will be destroyed" ideology are often equally attached to the notion that the U.S. is an internationally unattractive place to live/invest.

Yes, I share the concerns about the erosion of civil liberties and the extreme over-reach of the State and concentrations of private capital in the U.S. These are real and worrisome trends I have covered in depth for years.

But we need to see the U.S. through overseas eyes--for example, from a Chinese perspective.?Since we have many close friends in China, Japan, Korea and Thailand, and have traveled extensively "on the ground" in these nations over the past 20 years, I have multiple first-hand reports of conditions and perceptions in Asia.

The first thing that is attractive about the U.S. is the wide open spaces--just look how much of the country is sparsely inhabited. Compared to places constantly teeming with people, the U.S. is wide-open. (Recall that the U.S. is?Meiguo?in Mandarin:?Beautiful Country.)

Just another landscape in America, ho-hum....

The northern side of Mt. Rainier (Sunrise):

Also noteworthy is the air is generally amazingly clean in the U.S. Even smog-ridden Los Angeles is relatively clean compared to Chinese urban air quality.

Then there's the rule of law, which despite constant abuse still exists in the U.S. Your assets will not be expropriated at the whim of a senior Party official.

These same conditions also make Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Chile and Europe attractive places to invest surplus currency. The difference between all these places and the U.S. is of course the size of the currency holdings needing a home: the long-standing trade deficits with China have stockpiled hundreds of billions of USD in China. That alone powers a much greater interest in U.S. real estate.

Despite its bloated Plutocracy and numerous structural problems, the U.S. is exceedingly stable compared to other nations and remarkably dynamic compared to less-dynamic safe-havens such as Japan.

Lastly, there are enclaves serving dozens of nationalities in the "98% of us are immigrants" U.S. (92 languages have been identified among students of the Los Angeles Unified School District.) Your religious faith, class origins, caste and all the other social attributes than limit your social and financial mobility in much (if not most) of the world don't matter that much in cosmopolitan parts of America. In general, people here are too busy to care about your personal history: just get the job done and don't rip-off/exploit others, and you are good to go about your business.

Those with assets in China are feeling increasingly insecure.?Even if your wealth was earned legitimately, as opposed to being skimmed via corruption or officially sanctioned theft, it doesn't matter: when the blowback to corruption and inequality arises, everyone with assets will be a target.

THE phrase ?naked official?, or?luo guan, was coined in 2008 by a bureaucrat and blogger in Anhui province, Zhou Peng?an, to describe officials who have moved their family abroad, often taking assets with them. Once there, they are beyond the clutches of the Communist Party in case anything, such as a corruption investigation, should befall the official, who is left back at home alone (hence ?naked?). Mr Zhou says the issue has created a crisis of trust within the party, as officials lecture subordinates on patriotism and incorruptibility, but send their own families abroad.?
You do not have to be corrupt to be ?naked?, however. Sending your family abroad is simply a state of maximum readiness. It does not suggest huge confidence in a stable Chinese future. Many wealthy businessmen have also been preparing exit strategies. One of the most common legitimate routes involves immigrant-investor programmes in America, Canada or Hong Kong, typically requiring an investment of up to $1m. Chinese nationals have rushed to apply for these. Three-quarters of applicants for America?s programme last year were Chinese.?
In 2011 the central bank published an estimate on its website, attributed to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, that up to 18,000 officials had fled the country between 1995 and 2008 with stolen assets totalling 800 billion yuan ($130 billion at today?s exchange rate). The bank then claimed the figures were inaccurate, and scrubbed them from its website.?
Officials who can afford to send their families abroad are usually the most powerful, and the most aware of China?s problems. Says Mr Li of Peking University,??They know better than anyone that the China model is not sustainable and that it?s a risk to everybody.?

In essence, investing a mere $1 million in U.S. business and promising to hire Americans will yield up a highly-valued green card. From an overseas point of view, wages in the U.S. are not that burdensome: Apple store employees, and millions of other workers, earn $11.25 an hour.

We have to put all this overseas investment in perspective.?There are roughly $62 trillion in net assets in the U.S., and over $20 trillion in real estate. $200 billion or even $2 trillion isn't going to buy a dominant piece of the U.S. economy.

There are positives to overseas investors buying U.S. properties.?Everyone who owns real estate wants their parcel to start rising in value, and the only way that can happen is for demand to exceed supply. The "creative destruction" of capitalism only works if owners who have failed to capitalize on assets move on and turn the assets over to those with capital and a desire to rework the assets into productive uses.

The irony is that the driver of overseas buying of real estate--trade deficits--could decline as oil prices slip and imports from China decline in recession. Those complaining about overseas buying may withdraw their complaints if the drivers of overseas investment dry up and the buyers vanish, leaving the U.S. real estate market vulnerable to another cascade down in valuations.

At that point, people may wish Chinese investors were still buying in Toledo.?

Resistance, Revolution, Liberation: A Model for Positive Change (print $25)
(Kindle eBook $9.95)

We are like passengers on the Titanic ten minutes after its fatal encounter with the iceberg: though our financial system seems unsinkable, its reliance on debt and financialization has already doomed it.We cannot know when the Central State and financial system will destabilize, we only know they will destabilize. We cannot know which of the State?s fast-rising debts and obligations will be renounced; we only know they will be renounced in one fashion or another.
The process of the unsustainable collapsing and a new, more sustainable model emerging is called revolution, and it combines cultural, technological, financial and political elements in a dynamic flux.
History is not fixed; it is in our hands. We cannot await a remote future transition to transform our lives. Revolution begins with our internal understanding and reaches fruition in our coherently directed daily actions in the lived-in world.

Mike Ragogna: Suzie Cracks The Whip: A Conversation With Blues ...

2012-06-27-51Btrj9HdvL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

A Conversation With Blues Traveler's Chan Kinchla

Mike Ragogna: Let's just dive into this interview, shall we?

Chan Kinchla: We certainly shall!

MR: Indeed, we shall! Let's chat about your new album, Suzie Cracks The Whip. Now, I've kind of read what this is about, but could you tell our listeners the story behind the title of the album?

CK: Well, like all great titles we like, it has to be kind of evocative of what could be a bunch of things. It's nice if it's evocative of different things to different people, but our inspiration actually was something kind of funny. When we were in the studio, we were recording here in Los Angeles at Killingsworth Studios, and there was this twenty-year-old girl, this cute little blonde from Wichita, Kansas. She had just moved out to L.A. She wanted to be in the music business. Great singer, great player, but she was also working in the studio, and she was really good at running the computer, running the boards. She was just a little badass! So we just got such a kick out of her, but she was really sweet. So then we did a photo shoot, and for some reason, John had a whip because John has all kinds of weird things. During the photo shoot, John was cracking the whip, and we recorded it for the record. And then we had her whipping it, and, of course, once you have a pretty twenty-year-old blonde girl with a whip and you have a photographer, you're going to have her whipping you! So she started kind of just fake whipping us, so then the catch phrase of the whole album, when she would ask us quite nicely to do something, we would be like, "Whoa, Suzie cracks the whip!" So it's just kind of one of those things that became kind of one of the inside little jokes through the whole session. You live on top of each other for a couple months, and those things come up. But we kind of liked it because it's evocative of a lot of things. It seems like there's a story behind it. You know, cracking the whip is an age-old phrase. We liked a lot of those aspects of it, and it had something to do with the record, so it seemed to just make itself the title.

MR: Now, speaking of cracking the whip, you had the production team of Sam Hollander and Dave "Sluggo" Katz, so did Sam and Sluggo crack the whip at all?

CK: They were incredible, Sam and Dave, as well, but Sam is kind of the vibe master. He's not so much of a whip cracker as kind of setting the table, getting everyone really comfortable, having a really relaxed atmosphere, and knowing what's important to focus on. So he was actually more of like a Zen master than a whip cracker. What I loved about him is that he got John very comfortable, and John sang so relaxed. You can really hear it. During the whole record, making the record, we were having a lot of fun in really a very creative, very fun space. The music came out sounding really relaxed like the musicians were having fun.

MR: Yeah, it's probably my personal favorite since Four, but that's just me.

CK: Oh, well that's terrific! I agree with you. It's my personal favorite since Four as well because one of the nice things is that we had so much good material to work with. I guess I'll just jump ahead question-wise, but the year previous, we went down to Austin, which is kind of our second home in Texas, and we stayed down at this ranch outside of Austin and just woodshedded a whole bunch of songs. But what's different is that it seems like with every record, we're good for like five or six good songs, and then there's like four or five filler songs, so we were working on our songs, but we brought in a bunch of different great songwriters from the Austin area and from all over, really, and worked up a couple songs with each of them. Or we'd handle the music, and they'd put lyrics to it or vice versa. But we came out of there with about thirty songs, and so we had a lot of really good melodies and great lyrics and great ideas coming out of that. So when we were in the studio, we were able to just have fun and pick the best stuff. We weren't under the stress of coming up with something. Sometimes the studio can be a slog, and sometimes you can't just turn on great creativity. So having had that great session in Austin and having all that material to start with really opened up our ability to be able to just have fun sonically and just picking the best parts.

MR: Yeah, and you said you had some people that joined you in the songwriting process. I'm seeing Ron Sexsmith on the credits.

CK: He was one of them as well.

MR: That's pretty impressive.

CK: He's terrific. What a prodigious songwriter. There were a few songs of his that we worked on, and then what really seemed to work best is music we had already kind of come up with and he would write lyrics and help us kind of build those up. He's got a great sense of melody, but the nice thing is that it's a simple sense of melody, kind of like Steve Miller or something like that. Steve Miller is very melodic, but anyone feels like they can sing it, so he was really helpful, I think, in fleshing out a bunch of songs that were terrific.

MR: Yeah. you have a guest vocalist on "I Don't Wanna Go," a certain American Idol, Season 9 finalist, Crystal Bowersox, right?

CK: Crystal Bowersox is my favorite American Idol contestant ever! She's been coming to Blues Traveler shows for years, so we've been friends with her. That song was actually written in its entirety by this woman, Carrie...I'm blanking on the name.

MR: Carrie Rodriguez, maybe just a little?

CK: Yes, Carrie Rodriguez, exactly, who's terrific. We wrote a bunch of songs with her. And there are a lot of songs we wrote, actually, to digress for a minute, that didn't make the album, and we have really good demos of. So pretty much, all of these, we'll be releasing either as bonus tracks, or we'll put up some of the rougher ones on our website. Luckily, it's so easy to record some decent quality today that we got some really good demos. In any case, her having written it, once we picked the song, we always heard a woman's voice on there because that's how we originally heard it, so our good friend Jono Manson happened to be recording on Bowersox's new record right at the time, so it all kind of fell together, but that song came out great. Her and John's voices blended really nicely.

MR: Plus you had your old pal, Spin Doctors' Chris Barron is on there.

CK: Yeah, well Chris is our dear friend. We went to high school with Chris in Princeton before there was ever really a Blues Traveler. Chris was actually in Blues Traveler for like a month before we realized that we could only have one lead singer ego in the band, and we lived together. Chris is a dear friend, and the Spin Doctors, with us, kind of conquered New York together playing all these little bars, and then we got lucky, and good stuff happened. So it was great to have him come down, and we also got a good couple rounds of golf in too.

MR: (laughs) So Chan, how do you feel about twenty-five years with Blues Traveler? It's your anniversary this year.

CK: It's amazing! Well, it's a good thing we started when we were ten years old, but it's really cool, and at the same time, scary because any time you can put century after the length of time, as in quarter century, it can give one pause. To be honest, the time has flown by for the most part, and I'm looking forward to another quarter century. Let's make it to the half-century mark!

MR: And there's "Recognize My Friend"?

CK: We all had a hand in writing it. That was Brendan Hill, our drummer's song, and he came in, and you know certain songs are more thought out when they come in, and certain songs are more just like a cool little idea, and we work it up. That song is very simple even now, as far as chords and everything, so that was a very basic idea that Brendan brought in, and then so musically we kind of got that groove. Then John and Sexsmith worked up the melody and lyrics. But what were you going to ask specifically about that song?

MR: Well, I just love the sentiment of that song.

CK: It's beautiful. Once we got into it, we kind of thought of it... You know that song "Closing Time"? It kind of is one of those anthems to a friend, very much like that. It's a very cool sentiment.

MR: Yeah. Now the Kinchlas have a heavy hand in "All Things Are Possible."

CK: Yes, "All Things Are Possible." That song originally was kind of like a New Orleans funk thing, and it's kind of got a poignant sensibility to it, and it was kind of fun in the verse to have that more dreamy, poignant side, and then BOOM, jump into something that feels good. So that was the cool rub with that song, having that reggae to jump into really worked for me.

MR: Yeah, and then also "Things Are Looking Up," where a certain Tad Kinchla appears as a writer.

CK: That's a great album kind of rock track, but I think I could put that as one of my favorites on the record. I just think it's got a really cool kind of modern vibe but still very Blues Traveler. It's going to be great live.

MR: What are you predicting for this album?

CK: You know, in this record market, it's just so hard to try and do predictions or anything. I'm just very excited to play the stuff live. I think it's a record our fans are really going to like, and that's important to us. We just wanted to make something that was fun and fans could get into. We wanted to have a record where we played a lot of the songs live. This one, we've already started trying them out live, and they feel great, so that's I think why I'm excited. I'm really looking forward to just getting them in the mix and having fun this summer.

MR: So there will be some touring, of course, to support the album.

CK: Yeah, we have a whole bunch of stuff coming up. We're doing tours with the Barenaked Ladies and all summer, all over the country, with Cracker, Big Head Todd, us and Barenaked Ladies. It's kind of like your "Favorite Bands From the '90s That Still Rock" Tour. All really good, musical bands, and actually, bands that we've all played with and are friends with, so that's all over the country in July and August. Then this Fall it's just Blues Traveler really hardcore doing big theater stuff in all the major markets, and then we'll take it from there, starting on the 4th of July for our twentieth annual 4th of July Red Rocks.

MR: Nice. I asked John (Popper) this, now it's your turn. What is your advice for new artists?

CK: Well, I think the most important thing to do is to get good and to get something going. You've got to find yourself a place you can play out on a regular basis that kind of becomes your home, your woodshedding home, so you can go out a couple times a month. With us, we played several places in New York City. We'd play Mondays at Nightingale, Tuesdays at another place, Wednesdays another venue, Thursdays at Wetlands, almost every week. It started out in one place. We played Nightingale every Monday night. What happens is, you sit in a studio forever practicing, but once you get it out onstage and you make it a regular thing, you get better, and then you start building a crowd. It becomes a social thing. People want to come down, and your friends come down, and it becomes your fun, cool thing to do. Then once you get that built in and going, all of a sudden, you've got something. Then you can get other gigs. But at the same time, you're really making yourself better because until you play stuff out live and you start getting a crowd, you're hamstrung.

MR: One last thing. What's you're favorite tune from the album?

CK: Well, we've already been playing "You Don't Have To Love Me," which actually goes over great. Any time you can clap along, that rocks. But I really think the song "Things Are Looking Up" is the one that I think is going to be a real live Blues Traveler class. It's got a lot of different parts, and it's got that openness that's going to turn into a good live behemoth.

MR: Things certainly are looking up for Blues Traveler and your new album, Suzie Cracks The Whip. Oooh.

CK: That excites you.

MR: It excites you guys too.

CK: It does.

MR: I think it's a guy thing.

CK: Exactly.

MR: Any parting words of wisdom, sir?

CK: I would just say let's go out and have some good fun this summer! I think things are looking up all over.

MR: Nice. Thank you so much.

CK: No problem, brother! It's a pleasure talking to you, and I hope I see you soon this summer!

A Conversation With Hard Rock Records' John Galloway

Mike Ragogna: Hi there, John Galloway of Hard Rock Records.

John Galloway: Hey, how are you doing?

MR: I'm doing OK, how are you?

JG: I'm doing fantastic tonight.

MR: The last time I checked in with Hard Rock was with the hotel chain with Brian Klein who was putting out the word about the integration of music with people staying at Hard Rock hotels. But you rep Hard Rock Records. Can you go into how this venture started and what the future holds?

JG: I'd say music has been core our brand, Hard Rock, since it really came to life in 1971 in London. Our founders, Isaac Tigret and Peter Morton, made music essential to what the brand stands for and forty-one years later, it remains the case whether you're at a hotel, casino, or caf?. I think after long discussions, Hard Rock Records emerged from wanting to give back to an industry, the music industry, that has been so good to us and really bringing to life our properties and allowing us to deliver authentic experiences that rock. Ultimately, it's for us a way to show the industry that we care about music, that we're involved in music and that we want to see music succeed on a global scale.

MR: You have A&R people that work under you?

JG: I sure do.

MR: What is the process? How do you filter through what's being submitted?

JG: I have two co-heads of A&R, a gentleman named James Buell and a gentleman named Blake Smith who both have significant music backgrounds and passions. James and Blake are the judge and the jury of who gets to be a Hard Rock Records band. We have a thing called Hard Rock Rising: The Battle of the Bands. We had 12,000 bands participate in Hard Rock Rising so we got a sneak peak at 12,000 bands across the globe. So certainly, by looking at potential talent, it gave us a huge pool to pick from. In fact, Rosco Bandana, the first band to sign to the label, came out of our global battle of the bands from 2011. That's certainly one way we can do it. Ultimately beyond that, we are keeping an ear glued to the street from our contact in the music industry. We're doing a showcase in Chicago, we did a showcase the other night in Orlando to see the up and coming bands are out there. We invite bands that seem to have good buzz and credibility that are unsigned and see how they perform on stage and also what they think of Hard Rock and if they meet certain criteria, being a band that enjoys the brand, seeing a band that has potential, a band that has a little different look or feel to them, they may just fit our relationship.

MR: As you may not know, at the end of the show, I'm going to pitch you two bands that I think are amazing.

JG: If they're amazing, I want to hear them for sure.

MR: (laughs) Okay, let's get into Rosco Bandana, a Gulfport, Mississippi, group. How did they win?

JG: I would say this. Rosco had a very different sound to them. They had a different look, they had a different sound, and ultimately what mattered for them and got them into the contest was support of fans beyond Gulfport and in the entire Southeast. So to at least get noticed in our battle of the bands, you have to have fan support and you have to have fans voting for you. You had to be somewhat credible enough to get that. When they ultimately did win in their section from Hard Rock Rising: The Battle of the Bands, I had an opportunity to see them in Orlando--they played a showcase for us. I was really struck by the sound, it was a sound which, quite frankly, I hadn't heard. It was a combination of a little rock, a little blues, a little country, and a little jazz, brought all together in a unique sound. I heard them on the stage for the first time in Orlando live and thought that those guys really have what it takes. We weren't just looking to introduce the same sound that's out there today. We wanted to bring something new to the music world and I think Rosco does just that.

MR: Now you're a Hard Rock VP and Chief Marketing Officer, right?

JG: That is correct.

MR: So that means you truly aren't John Galloway of Pennsylvania's House of Representatives.

JG: I do not know John Galloway the house representative. I only know a goalie from Syracuse, New York, named John Galloway, but now I guess I know two John Galloways.

MR: (laughs) How are you going to promote and distributing your acts on this label?

JG: I'd start with probably the most unique thing. Hard Rock right now is in fifty-three countries worldwide. If you put that in perspective, Starbucks--which is pretty ubiquitous--is in fifty-two countries worldwide. So we're in fifty-three countries with a major reach across the globe as a brand.

MR: You guys win.

JG: But in every single one of those countries and every single one of our venues, we have video music systems. From day one, when we launch Rosco Bandana, we will be able to transmit Rosco's music video into fifty-three countries around the world. We'll be able to get them in front of consumers in Bangkok, in Mumbai, in Singapore, in Destin, Florida, and in Seattle, which is rather unique. We're going to finish shooting their video on the 19th of June where we'll debut it in Nashville, Tennessee. At that point, we will broadcast that video worldwide, so a pretty good distribution hit for a newly signed band. We also have 4.5 million Facebook fans where we'll also be able to interview those folks for Rosco Bandana as well. We have a program, Sound of Your Stay, that goes out to all of our hotels around the world. We'll be able to introduce, via free downloads of our tracks, programs to our hotel guests and visitors to the Rosco Bandana band as well. We'll be responsible for their PR, so we're working with Tell All Your Friends PR, as well as using our resources to bring to life the band. We're hooking -up with a digital distribution agreement as well, so we'll get distributed on iTunes as well as Amazon. In a sense, we're using all the creative resources we have as a worldwide global band to bring Rosco to the same place as Hard Rock travels today.

MR: Nice. May I throw something out you?

JG: Throw it.

MR: Wouldn't it be fun for guests at hotels, since they're renting guitars as part of their stay, to encourage them to record their own video of the Rosco Bandana song.

JG: I think it would be great, we will add that one to the list!

MR: (laughs) John, what does the future bring? As Tom Petty might say, is it wide open?

JG: The future is very wide open. Right now, we're in our infancy of Hard Rock ideas. The idea today is not a revenue idea generating from us. From a dollars perspective, it is a revenue generator in good will. We're trying to generate good will in the music industry with artists as well as the tastemakers in the industry. For the future, we're looking to sign 2-3 new bands in 2012 and beyond that, the future looks bright to 2013 and beyond. To be honest, we're ironing out the kinks, we're new to this game and we're finding out, certainly initially, some of the challenges in getting these bands through the recording process, through the video process, through the distribution process and getting them out on tour. We want to kill it with Rosco, we want to give them everything they need to succeed and eventually go on to sign with a big label. That's the win for us. Right now, we're very close to signing two additional bands for 2012.

MR: John, what advice do you have for new artists?

JG: I guess the advice I have for new artists is be as creative as possible in terms of how you're reaching out to people in the industry. We go through a lot with artists in terms of asks for play, asks for monies, contingencies they put on deals. Right now, the music industry is suffering a little bit and artists need to be willing to go out there and put together unique ideas that they can play from a marketing perspective and with marketing partners that are win-win, but maybe necessarily, huge financial trains that may limit their opportunity for exposure.

MR: What do you think about the goal of being on a label versus not being on a label? There seem to be two levels of the business right now--the DIY approach, and trying to pitch yourself to indie or major labels to get "that deal."

JG: Ultimately, I still believe in the major labels. I still ultimately believe in the support. There is a school of thought of DIY, but the reality of it is that it's hard. As a small, new label, I can tell you it's hard. We talk to folks in the industry and it seems to be better to be a big boy these days than a small boy. We are a small boy, a little infant, in the industry. All I wish for our bands is that we're able to give somebody a chance to make it on the big stage and I think the big stage often comes with a larger label than actually we are today. Otherwise, we'd go into that business further.

MR: Although you have distribution that is definitely envied by the music business in general because you have those alternate means of getting music to people that record companies still have problems with because they have their traditional lanes of getting music out there.

JG: Absolutely, I think that's why we wanted to start this business because we thought we have the assets. We do control that every day. I can decide what goes on at 10 o'clock, what goes on a video screen in Bangkok, or what goes across our entire system. So we're bringing that music to consumers already, we just needed to take more of an active role and actually how that music gets out there and what the future of music is. Again, for us, it's a big, big learning curve, but it's also something where we can help the industry introduce new acts. We also have venues. This year, we did over 17,000 live music acts across our Hard Rock hotels, casinos, and cafes, so an enormous number of acts goes through our venues. Again, it's important to us and we wanted to show that we care and we appreciate it.

MR: What do you think looking back at the forty-one years that you guys have been doing this?

JG: Wow. I've only been with Hard Rock for 2.5 years. There are so many people, certainly our founders Issac and Peter, who invented this concept of this theory of hard rock and the relationship with Eric Clapton giving us our first piece of memorabilia forty years ago. So I'm happy and proud to be a caretaker of the brand while I have the pleasure of serving it and see if I can add a piece or two to the legacy of the brand. I certainly think Hard Rock Records is a way to give back to the industry. Ultimately, I think that's how I want us to be viewed. We care, we get it, we understand it, and we want to be credible in the music space because it's given a lot back to our different venues.

MR: John, thank you for spending some time with us and giving us a glimpse into the new label, Hard Rock Records. All the best of luck with it in the future.

JG: Thanks a ton as well and you just let me know what those two bands are sometime.

Home Entertainment Installation: Setting Up The Hardware - DirectBuy

With today?s advanced digital technology, homeowners can enjoy a cinema like experience in the comfort of their living room or home theaters. When setting up a home entertainment center, it is important to be familiar with all of the technical specifications and installation procedures for all of the equipment.

Mounting The TV

The age of High Definition has made a flat panel television the standard component of any home entertainment setting. Instead of using traditional cabinets and stands, ultra sleek and thin flat panel HDTVs can be easily mounted onto a wall. There are TV mounts that are stationary and there are those that can be tilted. Additionally, TV mounts have specific weight and size restrictions, so it is important to know your TV?s screen size and other dimensions.

Some TV mounts are adjustable and can be opened up to accommodate a wide range of flat panel screen sizes. Mounting the TV is a matter of drilling some holes in the wall and fastening the supporting brackets.

Setting Up The Audio System

Standard audio systems of a home theater include multiple tower style speakers that can be placed around the home entertainment center. However, all of the speakers can crowd up the room and create an unappealing and distracting setting.

In general, you should have the latest surround sound technology in your home theater system to enjoy the best sound quality.? The most advanced audio systems feature speakers that are installed into walls and ceilings of a home entertainment room. These types of speakers have a recessed design as the subwoofers are completely hidden behind walls and ceilings, leaving only the speaker trims exposed. However, installing speakers in ceilings and walls can be slightly tricky if you don?t know what you are doing.

In-Wall and In-Ceiling Audio System

Installing recessed speakers involves drilling holes in appropriate spots in the walls and ceilings. This means that you will have to use stud finders and mark the locations of empty space between the studs. You also want to make sure that there isn?t any insulation behind the walls and ceilings. In general, recessed speakers require several inches of clearance space, so all obstructions such as insulation, pipes, and other wires should be avoided. The in-wall and in-wall ceiling speakers should also be properly covered to prevent vibrations from reaching other parts of the house. Additionally, the home?s electrical wiring system can cause interference in the audio system?s operation, so there should be minimum clearance between electrical cables and audio cables.

All of the speakers should be installed at precise locations in the wall or ceiling that will prevent the phenomena of sound wave interference. The position of the speakers has to be taken into account in relation to where people will sit in the home entertainment theater. Needless to say, all of the audio system?s wiring also has to be concealed behind the walls and ceilings.

Surge Protection For Home Entertainment System

One of the most important components of a home entertainment system is a surge protector. This small device can prevent harmful electrical surges that may damage the TV, audio system, routers, media hubs, Blu-ray players, and any other components of the home entertainment setup. Some of the best surge protectors have more than a dozen electrical outlets to accommodate all of the components of a home theater. Additionally, the best surge protectors feature warranties that can reimburse hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to home entertainment equipment.

Setting the home entertainment system can be a daunting task when it comes to installing of all of the hardware. If you are not confident in your do-it-yourself skills, then ask for professional installation services at the local electronics, department, and hardware stores.

Long-term calcium and vitamin D supplement use may be linked to increased risk of kidney stones

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Calcium and vitamin D supplements are associated with high calcium levels in the blood and urine, which could increase the risk of kidney stones, a new study finds.

The results will be presented Tuesday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"The use of calcium and vitamin D supplementation may not be as benign as previously thought," said principal investigator J. Christopher Gallagher, M.D., professor and director of the Bone Metabolism Unit at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, NE. "Pending further information, people should not exceed the guidelines suggested by the Institute of Medicine, which are 800 international units of vitamin D, and 800-1,200 milligrams per day of calcium."

Taking vitamin supplements has become a widespread practice throughout many parts of the world. In the United States alone, it is estimated that nearly two-thirds of women take vitamin supplements, with calcium and vitamin D among the most commonly used. Despite their popularity, the precise health effects of long-term calcium and vitamin D supplementation remain unclear.

Previous research has indicated that high levels of calcium in the urine, or hypercalciuria, may increase the risk of kidney stones. Elevated calcium in the blood, or hypercalcemia, is associated with many complications, including bone and kidney problems.

Gallagher and study lead author Vinod Yalamanchili, M.D., research fellow in Creighton University's Bone Metabolism Unit, studied 163 healthy, postmenopausal women between the ages of 57 and 85 years. All participants were randomly assigned to receive a vitamin D supplement of 400, 800, 1600, 2400, 3200, 4000, or 4800 international units a day, or placebo. Then, their calcium intake was increased from an initial intake of 691 to 1,200-1,400 milligrams per day. Investigators measured blood and urinary calcium levels at the beginning of the study, and then every three months for one year.

They found that approximately 48 participants, or 33 percent, developed high urinary levels of calcium at some time in the study. These participants had 88 episodes of high urinary calcium. Hypercalciuria has been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones identified in previous studies. No incidents of kidney stones were reported during this one-year study, which was funded by The National Institute on Aging.

Additionally, about 10 percent of study subjects developed high blood levels of calcium. This translates into 25 episodes among 16 participants. In both cases, the increases were unrelated to the dosage of vitamin D.

"Because of the unpredictable response, it is not clear whether it is the extra calcium, the vitamin D or both together that cause these problems," Gallagher said. "However, it is possible that long-term use of supplements causes hypercalciuria and hypercalcemia, and this can contribute to kidney stones. For these reasons, it is important to monitor blood and urine calcium levels in people who take these supplements on a long-term basis. This is rarely done in clinical practice."

HBT: Phillies to activate Utley on Wednesday

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com has the good news on Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, who made it through eight innings Saturday evening in his final rehab game with the Single-A Clearwater Threshers:

Utley is now expected to travel to Philadelphia for the final stage of his rehab assignment. That is likely to include his playing in one more minor-league game, probably Tuesday at Triple A Lehigh Valley, before being activated for Wednesday?s game against Pittsburgh ? provided there are no setbacks.

The 33-year-old has been on the disabled list since the end of spring training because of a degenerative issue behind his left kneecap.

Utley batted .259/.344/.425 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI in 103 regular-season games last year before going 7-for-16 (.438/.571/.688) in Philadelphia?s NLDS loss to the Cardinals. You Decide: Should there be an Investor's Human ... - HR C-Suite

You Decide: Should there be a Human Capital Value Standard?

Jun 25, 2012

Do you remember the last time you bought a car? You might first start by researching brands and models that interest you. You might seek out information on the internet, read consumer reports, and listen to what trusted advisors say about the car. You might check safety ratings and if there were any major recalls.? A test drive is also important.? Ultimately you want to know everything about that item before investing several thousands of dollars.? Ultimately, you depend on the information provided to be complete and accurate.

The investor relation?s picture is no different.? As prospective shareholders seek to invest dollars, complete and accurate company disclosures on value and performance become key component of that decision.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has developed a draft human capital standard that is intended to help investors evaluate the value of a company?s human capital.? The proposed standard titled, ?Human Resource Indices for Investors? is currently being developed for certification by the American National Standards Institute.

The standard would require publicly held companies to provide discussion and analysis in these five areas:

  • Spending on human capital, including the total head count and number of full-time equivalent employees; and the total amount spent on employees (all wages, benefits, and taxes); spending in lieu of employees (temps, contractors, outsourcing); and the total spent on training and development;
  • The company?s ability to retain talent, including voluntary and total turnover broken down by job types;
  • The company?s leadership depth, including the percentage of defined positions with an identified successor, and whether defined positions were filled internally or externally;
  • The company?s leadership quality based on responses to an employee survey; and
  • Employee engagement results based on an employee survey.

Bloomberg BNA reports that controversy surrounds this initiative.

Supporters of the initiative say, ?Establishing respected and durable measurements of human capital value that must be included in investor communications is crucial for presenting a full picture of the performance and wealth of an organization.?

Opponents of the initiative are skeptical that investors are even requesting this information. In addition, the HR Policy Association commented in a letter dated May 18, ?The members of our Association were taken aback that the Society of Human Resource Management would propose yet another significant new regulatory burden.?

Like most debated issues it is helpful to weigh the pros and cons before deciding. Here is a list highlighting some of the pros and cons of implementing such a standard.

The Pros:

  • It would provide a wider scope of company information for investors;
  • It would raise human capital management higher on the executive radar;
  • Human Capital Management would potentially be taken more seriously;
  • It would provide information for regulatory agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission;
  • It is a step toward the need to establish respected and durable human capital measures.

The Cons:

  • It adds additional regulatory burdens on companies;
  • It would create a competitive disadvantage by disclosing talent and potentially proprietary information;
  • It is hard to gather data required. For example, fluctuations in foreign currencies could complicate the compilation of salary data;
  • Basing leadership value on employee surveys is potentially short-sided. Leadership is more than a popularity contest;
  • The disclosure of staffing costs could reduce the flexibility to adjust workforce staffing to meet fluctuating customer demands.

SHRM has indicated they will reopen the standard up for additional comments after they incorporate the first round of suggestions. If you missed the first opportunity to make your voice heard like I did, stay tuned for round two.

Bravo Confirms Departure of Jill Zarin from The Real Housewives of New York City

It's been known for awhile, but now it's confirmed: Jill Zarin will not appear again on The Real Housewives of New York City.

Zarin herself commented on her exit last September, while rumors then surfaced that Ramona Singer was responsible for the ousting. But Bravo has finally released a statement of its own on the matter, stating for the record:

"We wish Jill the best, but there is no consideration of her returning to the series.

Zarin, Jill

The network, of course, overhauled this franchise's cast with Heather Thomson, Carole Radziwill and Aviva Drescher heading into its fifth season.

Ratings have been down a bit, however, leading to chatter that Zarin could return. Jill prompted that talk, too, when she told The New York Daily News recently: "I've reached out and offered [Bravo] any support they need" in order to boost viewership.

That will not come to fruition, though, it's now clear, while no new reality show featuring Zarin is in the works, either.

Gazans celebrate Brotherhood victory in Egypt

Palestinians wave green Islamic flags that represent Hamas and the Egyptian national flag as they celebrate the victory of Mohammed Morsi in the Egyptian presidential elections, in Gaza City, Sunday, June 24, 2012. The Muslim Brotherhood victory in Egyptian presidential elections raises fears in Israel that the historic 1979 peace agreement with its southern neighbor is now in danger, a scenario that would have grave implications for regional security. (AP) ? The Gaza Strip erupted in celebratory gunfire on Sunday with news that the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate won the presidency in neighboring Egypt, but one person was killed.

Tens of thousands of joyous Palestinians took to the streets across the territory after Egypt announced that Mohammed Morsi won last weekend's runoff election, the first time an Islamist has won that nation's highest office.

Gunmen fired automatic weapons in the air, while mosque loudspeakers rang with prayer. Some revelers handed out candy on street corners. Others waved Egyptian flags and blasted the country's national anthem from car speakers.

A Gaza health official said that one person was killed and six others wounded by celebratory gunfire.

Gaza is ruled by the militant Islamic Hamas, a local offshoot of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt's ousted president, Hosni Mubarak, collaborated with Israel in a blockade of Gaza they said was necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas.

Now Gaza residents say they are optimistic that the new Egyptian leader will improve relations with the impoverished Palestinian territory.

"Today is new era for us in Gaza. The days of suffering due to the Egyptian authorities are over," said Rawhi Talab, 51, a food store owner. "It's a day of joy ... I voice my hope that Egypt will work to improve our life here," he said.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh phoned Morsi to congratulate him on becoming Egypt's first Islamist president. "This is a victory for all Arabs and Muslims, and this is God's promise to his believers," the Hamas leader said to the newly elected president.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum and other Hamas leaders followed developments closely on TV and went ecstatic when the announcement came that the Brotherhood won. "This is a victory for Egypt and the revolution and the Arab people," Barhoum said.

Gaza resident Alam Mansour handed out candy to revelers. "Today is a festival for Gaza," the 25-year-old engineering student said. "I am sure that the president of Egypt will lead the Islamic nation to great prosperity, and he will help us here in Gaza," he said.

Hamas plans a rally Sunday evening in support of Morsi.

Gaza has a 15-kilometer (9-mile) border with Egypt's Sinai desert and one official border crossing between the two.
