Entertainment | How the Music Lyrics of British Artists Fare in ...

For many, America is the center of world entertainment. After all, America has Hollywood and Broadway?two major points in entertainment and culture. People have this belief that anyone who has made it in the American entertainment scene has made it in the rest of the world. But while this may be true, this country doesn?t have the monopoly on good singers and artists. Britain, too, is home to some of the best talents in the music industry, and their songs have the most spectacular music and lyrics. Of course, not every British artist succeeds in America, even though the music and the lyrics of their songs are similar to that from American artist. In form and content, however, the best British artists push the envelope. The structure of their songs, the composition of their lyrics, and the overall quality of their music are usually different, even avant-garde, making them a cut above the rest. Here are some of Britain?s recent artists whose music and lyrics will be remembered in America and beyond.

?Bleeding Love? by Leona Lewis

Leona Lewis was one of 2008?s biggest stars?not just in her home country, but also in American and other parts of the world. Her second single, titled ?Bleeding Love,? helped catapult her into worldwide fame. More than Lewis local prowess (which critics say is impressive), the hook of the song is its tight sound and emotionally lyrics. The lyrics of ?Bleeding Love? is smart yet contemporary (sample lyrics: ?But something happened / For the very first time with you / My heart melted to the ground / Found something true / And everyone's looking 'round / Thinking I'm going crazy?). In fact, while a number of critics have cited parts of song as somewhat dated, they say its lyrics keep it from becoming overly old in terms of sound.

?Rockferry,? by Duffy

Another female artist from England that has achieved fame in America is Duffy. In fact, for her debut album, she was already nominated for the Grammy Best New Artist award (in contrast, fellow nominee The Jonas Brothers was cited for their third studio effort). Her first single ?Rockferry? did the trick for her. With a sound and lyrics similar to that of 2007?s critics darling (and tabloid fodder) Amy Winehouse, ?Rockferry? was often described as ?grand.? Its lyrics reflect that grandeur, with both lyrics and Duffy?s vocals complimenting each other, especially when tackling the song?s emotional depth (same lyrics: ?There?s no sleep on the journey, away from town / A bag of songs and a heavy heart, won't make me doubt / I give it all my strength and my mind / I'll make this decision, win all the fights?).

?Viva la Vida,? by Coldplay

One of the few British bands that broke through the international scene, Coldplay became famous for their earlier hits ?Fix You? and ?Speed of Sound.? Their recent hit, ?Viva la Vida,? evokes the same quality as their earlier creations. Note the lyrics of this song, which was one of the top contenders for the 2009 Grammy Awards: ?I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing / Roman cavalry choirs are singing / Be my mirror my sword and shield / My missionaries in a foreign field.? The lyrics of this song can be considered as bold and unconventional. Yet, the lyrics still evoke strong emotions, and they are still tight regardless of the innovations done.
